How common are false negatives?

Hello! Looking for some advice please : )

Myself and my partner have been not trying but not actively preventing pregnancy so I don't temp or track ovulation apart from what Clue and WOOM tell me.

I normally have 28/29 day cycles and have been fairly regular since I turned 18 - so this month we've been preparing every day for my proposed ovulation week and a few days after, so if all went to plan there's a good chance of pregnancy.

However, AF was due Thursday/Friday, so I'm either 2 or 3 days late which I know may not sound like a big deal but is really rare for me. At about 12 DPO I couldn't resist the urge to test so bought a twin pack of the CB Rapid Response Tests. I was expecting one to come back negative (I had really strange symptoms and was sure I was pregnant) and it came back void. As in nothing in the control box, no negative or anything. So put it out of my mind and told myself that either AF will come or I'll test again using the other test in the pack.

Skip to this morning, I wake up and realise AF hasn't came through the night, I don't feel it coming so decide I'll test again and it comes back negative. I'm really disappointed but in the back of my head think AF will come today knowing my luck. However all day I've felt really wet down there (TMI but have for the past week, had a bit of creamy CM a few days ago or LOADS of EWCM), but don't have any typical cramps or anything that'd make me think my periods coming. I do have some cramping that doesn't feel the same, the only way I can explain it is like ovulation pain but whereas ovulation pain is more at the one side this pain is in the middle and hurts for about a minute and then stops.

I know I'm probably clutching at straws here but I'm thinking I got a bad batch? How common are false negatives? I'll keep waiting for AF and if she's not reared her head this time next week I'll test with another brand but wanted to know if there's still hope?
