Mirena - spotting - how long does it last?

Hi, I had the mirena coil fitted last Friday, when I was still on my period, and have been bleeding/spotting ever since. I should have finished my period on Saturday but it doesn’t seem to have stopped. I just wondered how long the spotting might go on for? I realise it’s still early days but the thought of continuously spotting/bleeding is filling me with dread. Thanks x

I had one fitted almost exactly a year ago. I found the spotting really irritating. It wasn’t that heavy - I really only needed a pantyliner. I kept googling and it said 3-6 months and I was just starting to wonder if it was worth it, when it stopped. That was 7 weeks after fitting and nothing since. I love it.

For me, about 6 weeks. I hadn’t been warned about it (this was 1994!). Once it stopped it stopped forever, I haven’t had a period (or pms) since and my Mirena became part of my HRT. Definitely worth the investment of those first weeks.

I had 6 weeks of light spotting and then haven't had a period in 10 years! (On my 2nd). Hang in there - it's definitely worth it.

For me it was 7 months,

For the first 2 months after fitting, I had spotting about half of the time. From about 3 months it settled down to being a fairly regular, predictable, much lighter than before period, with spotting for a few days before and about a week after it. I’ve had it about 6 months now, still getting periods that are much lighter but have spotting that drags on longer than before at the end (so maybe 8-10 days in total of bleeding/spotting a month). I’m still hoping it might stop altogether at some point!

I am 9 months in now and get the occasional light period that drags on for 10 or so days.

Hi, I am resurrecting to see how you're getting on now? I've had mine 12 days so I know it's early days but the spotting is now like a light period with some clotting (I also had sex - not showing off but in case that's related!). I had mine fitted about 3 days after my last period ended, so I'm not 'due' on for another 8 days.

LAC123 · 21/06/2022 18:08

Well I’ve bled ever since, started light brown/pinky and now more like a period which has been ongoing for 7 days! It’ll be 5 weeks this Friday since I’ve had it fitted and 6 weeks I’ve been bleeding 🙈 I am a bit down about it because it’s constant and I feel like I’m gonna bleed forever. I just would like to know it will stop at some point. It’s unpredictable as well, some days a lot more than others but never light enough for just a pantyliner.

Few weeks, total pain, then nothing for 12 years. Bliss. Wish I'd got one way sooner...

DidYeEye · 22/06/2022 13:21

Fingers crossed it dies down soon. If it was just me I'd not think about it so much, but I have a sexual partner and see him once a week. He's super understanding, but it's not that nice to look at!

LAC123 · 14/07/2022 18:14

Update, still spotting! I wondered if others could tell me if they just stopped suddenly or if it tailed off? Thanks

I had a 10 day period, then a week or so off spotting, and it's now back again as I approach what could be another period. Who knows! I read a lot of people saying that around 3 months it tails off or just stops. Fingers crossed!

Hi there, I know it’s been a while since you posted this but I just wanted to ask you what happened in the end? I’m about 2.5months in and I’m still bleeding/spotting with some breaks but then long periods of bleeding and it’s starting to get to me as I’m starting to think I’m going to be one of the unlucky ones who it doesn’t work for ☹️

DidYeEye · 03/05/2023 22:40

A little update from me, 9 months in and my periods have tapered off now and stopped. Still get cramps but it's massively settled, which is nice after so much spotting and bleeding. Not great for the start of a new relationship but he was great about it all.

ghum · 03/06/2023 07:23

First time I had Mirena my periods stopped immediately, no spotting, I loved it. The second time I had continual spotting and pelvic pain, after 7 months it spontaneously came out. DH had the snip after that 😂
