Depo injection after 50

I have used depo provera contraceptive injection as my primary choice since I was in my 20s. I've had breaks when out of relationships, TTC etc. It works for me and I'm happy with it.

I'm approaching 49 and I'm getting serious pushback from the GP about stopping depo. I believe it's to do with depo affecting bone density.

But I want more concrete info to be able to make an informed decision. Not just a blanket cease! Which they can't give! Just that depo isn't recommended post 50.

I want to know how many women are affected, bone density stuff to what level. I want to be able to weigh up the info and make up my own mind.

I don't suppose anyone here has any solid info?

In terms of bone health I'm on HRT (via a specialist, not via my GP) and I'm a regular runner. So both of these are positive for my bone health.

I have been told similar (49) but they said I can use the hormonal coil instead.

Yeah. Me too. I don't want a coil Sad

i had a non hormonal coil a while ago and didn't get on with it (too much bleeding) but the minera should be better.

But how do i know when i am ready to STOP the contraception? my mum said she had the menopause at 60. But if i am on depo etc i wont have any signs as such? no period to go missing anyway!
