Progestogen-Only Pill Help...

mrsjw17 · 02/02/2021 21:56

Please help I'm in a right mess.
I have been on the Microgynon pill since June 2020 after advice given by gynaecologist due to PCOS.

It has been FANTASTIC! Never had regular periods, always been heavy & in a lot of pain up until starting this!

Was a complete game changer after giving up with contraception for a while cause everything gave me nasty side effects.

I know when I'm due to start & when I'm due to finish. Flow is light & is barely around for 4 days.

NOW it comes to my review... (little late I think but hey) I'm no longer allowed to be on it.
I have 3 risk factors which could cause a stroke.
High blood pressure, BMI "over weight" & suffer with migraines.

They now want to mess my body up with going on a POP.
Coil & implant are out of the question & do not wish to discuss those options.

I don't want the "in between bleeds" or "no periods at all"..

I have always suffered with side effects on every medication & I know that my body just isn't going to get on with this.

I am having no issues at all with the pill I'm currently taking.
I understand the risks but I know my body & I have never felt more great.
I'm no longer doubled over in pain for days on end.

I just think it's so unfair & so hasty.

If there was a risk why put me on this in the first place!?

What's the views of CERELLE!? This is what they want me to go on.

Any advice would be grateful right now.

Shame to state the obvious but PLEASE BE KIND ♥

Cerelle is basically the same as cerazette. I took cerazette for years and had no periods, was great!

I moved to the mirena coil and still had no periods. Dh got the snip and now I use nothing

CeeceeBloomingdale · 02/02/2021 22:08

I took Microgynon for 20 years until it was no longer suitable. I now use Cerelle which I prefer. No periods but that's a good thing for me

mrsjw17 · 03/02/2021 09:47

Thanks ladies!

How long did it take your body to adjust? I know everyone if is different..
Did you have any bleeding in between? Gained weight?

@CeeceeBloomingdale how did you find it swapping over from Microgynon?

I'm just so upset that all these factors where there before they put me on this & now my body has got used to it I'm having to change 😩

My main concern is weight change. I went on the injection a few years ago & gained so much weight on that. I'm just concerned it's going to happen again & I don't want to gain anymore weight as I'm unhappy as it is x

No notable issues, no bleeding or weight change. I didn't move straight from one pill to the other though, I had a baby and then started with the new one.

Glitterb · 03/02/2021 11:26

I had to swap from microgynon to Cerazette a few years ago due to migraines, it’s been brilliant! No periods and no migraines. I have gained weight but that is not related to the pill, it was poor lifestyle.

dementedpixie · 03/02/2021 11:35

Weight gain is very common with the injection and it happened to me too - I put on loads and also bled lots too

I didn't have weight gain with cerazette and also no periods

mrsjw17 · 03/02/2021 11:59

Thank you ladies..

As you can probably tell (& most women are probably the same) I'm so anxious about changing something that works so well for me.

I understand the risks but just annoyed that they put me on it in the first place 😔

Hopefully it'll be okay & work out well xx

I was in your position about 10 years ago, got too old for Microgynon and was switched to Cerelle. No problems, no periods AT ALL after a month of light spotting and no baby - should have swapped years before!

obviously everyone's body chemistry is different but that's me. They are not 'trying to mess your body up', they are reducing your risk. If Cerelle doesn't suit there are other POP pills.

Weight gain is caused by eating too much for your energy expenditure, or sometimes by other conditions unrelated to the pill.

mrsjw17 · 03/02/2021 21:09

@murbblurb

Thank you so much for your reply.
It's reassured me that it's not as bad as what I was thinking, obviously everyone is different but what I've heard sounds good.
I have calmed down now, processed what's got to happen & realised the risks are not worth it.
The same doctor called me back today as she was worried cause I was quite upset.
(I'm struggling with everything at the moment..)
She explained things to me in more detail & im a lot happier.

I've been taking cerelle for two weeks and can't stand it anymore. I've literally gone to a paranoid wreck(I told the guy I'm talking to that I thought he was a fake/catfish little things that haven't bothered me until i started on this damn pill are playing on my mind), put on 10lbs in two weeks, lost all motivation (even for the things I love), I'm having night sweats, extremely tired, mood swings and have been over emotional.

When I saw the nurse I told her what cerazette did to me (turned me into a monster) and then she gave me cerelle (which is basically the same thing) and told me to retry it.

dementedpixie · 04/02/2021 11:48

You could ask for an alternative mini pill that is not desogestrel based @Isitreally777

mrsjw17 · 04/02/2021 12:21

This is what's bothering me....

Ahhhhhhhhh!! This has made me nervous again!!

I was on microgynon for a LONG time with no issues. Then told I would have to switch due to migraines. I was so upset at having to change from something which had always worked!

Have been on cerazette for 4 months now. I didn't like it at first as it gave me a headache for the first week. Have since read that this could be due to the change in oestrogen levels.

No headaches or other side effects since this though. No periods either which is a bonus from my POV!

TheVeryHungryTortoise · 04/02/2021 12:37

I'm sorry to hear that you can't take microgynon anymore OP. You are correct in that your gynae probably shouldn't have put you on it in the first place. I am facing similar in that I have been contraceptive free (except for condoms) for the past 3 years because I can't find a contraceptive that works for me. POPs make me breakout in acne and so too did mirena (as it's progesterone based again.) I tried the copper coil and used it for about 4 years before getting so fed up with the extremely heavy cramps and bleeding that left me in bed for 2 days each month. I have a history of eating disorders and I can't safely commit to the implant because psychologically I will be intensely focused/paranoid on weight. I loved Yasmin, but unfortunately I too suffer with migraines with aura and ended up having a hemiplegic migraine.

I hope you manage to get on well with the POP, it's important that you get off the microgynon with your history. I was 22 when I had my hemiplegic migraine and I thought it was a full on stroke. It's not worth the small risk!

Isitreally777 · 04/02/2021 12:39

@mrsjw17 everyone is different and reacts differently. I don't think my body likes the synthetic hormones as every pill I have been on over the years has been awful for me. I thought I would give it another go now I'm single again and trying to date (it's certainly a birth control, I've probably scared the poor guy off).

@dementedpixie I might go back and see a different nurse (one who might actually listen to me) and ask.

mrsjw17 · 04/02/2021 12:56

The doctor is really trying to push the coil & implant onto me.

I've point blank refused both on a number of occasions but she continues to ignore me & even went to the effect of texting me information.

I react with every medication I take not just contraception.

I dread to think of having a reaction but then not being able to get an appointment to have either removed.

It's just a complete no no!!!

I will try the POP & see how it goes. She's going to review it after 3 months but we will just have to see what happens.

My DH said that she was probably being pushing about coil & implant as it's not costing the NHS as much but surely she has to listen to my decision 🤷🏻‍♀️ x

TheVeryHungryTortoise · 04/02/2021 13:12

@mrsjw17 I understand what you mean about not wanting to be stuck with something in your that no one will take out. I actually got to the stage of desperation (madness?) where I went to my GP and told her that I would pull my coil out myself as they apparently had no one available to take it out. She took it out within that appointment. I wouldn't recommend that approach...

mrsjw17 · 04/02/2021 13:16

@TheVeryHungryTortoise

See that's what bothers me & with everything that's going on at the moment getting an appointment isn't the easiest thing (it was never easy away)!

Just the though of both of them make my stomach churn.

The are just a big NO!

The thought of having something in my arm 🤢🤮
& the though of having something in down there makes me feel the same.

No matter what she says or what information she sends me it's not going to change my mind x

I started the new pill today!

OP posts:

I have come off the Cerelle pill...

After 4 days I started having side effects of taking it.
Terrible headache for days on end, it brought on fainting episodes from existing medical conditions, exceeding sweating that I would be changing clothes & showering 2-3 times daily & also making me smell really fishy down there (Sorry TMI).

This is the last side effect I have & I don't know how to get rid. It's making me feel dirty, I haven't slept with my husband for over 4 weeks now..

Anyone have any ideas or tips to help this?? TIA
