Contraception after birth

Hi

I've recently had a baby (4 weeks ago) and phoned my GP to discuss going back on the pill. I wanted to go back on my usual pill which was Microgynon but the GP said the combined pill isn't suitable right after childbirth and instead prescribed the mini pill (Cerazette) which I've never had before. Does anyone know why this might be? I'm wary trying anything new as I've had a lot of problems with different contraceptive pills in the past. I also like to know exactly when I'll have my period but I've heard this can be unpredictable with the mini pill. I should have just asked the GP why at the time and I'm annoyed I didn't.

You can have microgynon from 6 weeks post delivery. It is also considered safe in breast feeding as no good evidence it affects supply. Not all GPs are up to date on that. Fertility returns from 4 weeks pp so be careful in the meantime.

Thank you for your reply. I'll probably wait a bit longer then until I can go back on Microgynon as I'd rather stick to what I know and what suits me. I don't plan on having sex anytime soon anyway! Smile
