Mirena coil won't come out.

Advice please.

I’m currently on my third mirena coil and had them since my early twenties. We have one LO, 20 months, and I had the mirena fitted again about a year ago.

Went to have it removed this week so we can try for another baby, but it won’t budge. Two doctors tried to get it out but after four attempts they called it a day. Needless to say it was bloody agony. Dr’s view is that it’s perforated the wall of my uterus or become embedded and I’ve now been referred to the complex gynae department in London for a scan and removal under a minor op of some kind.

Has anyone else been through this? What was the outcome? Did it affect your fertility? Do you get anaesthetic with the removal under op and was it a comfortable procedure. Genuinely more fearful of this than actually giving birth to the next one…

Thanks very much.

I got mine out under general anaesthetic although as far as I know it hadnt perforated anything. It was an hysteroscopy op

Were you unaffected afterwards, in terms of your fertility? Thanks so much for getting back to me. x

Nothing affected as far as I know. My dh had a vasectomy so I didn't need contraception plus it had expired. I ovulate and have regular periods now

thanks @dementedpixie

Hi! Sorry I don't know anything about fertility wise etc but I went to have my coil removed yesterday and they couldn't find my coil at all. Did you have any pain before the appointment? QI'm hoping mine has fallen out without my noticing Confusedx

Mine couldn't be removed because the strings couldn't be found. I had ultrasound and xray to check it was there (it was).

runabath · 28/01/2020 06:06

I had to have my second mirena removed under a general anaesthetic as the string had disappeared and I was told my cervix had atrophied Blush. It was a day case and no complications, just had my husband drive me home and took it easy that night. This was in Australia it's usual to go to an OBGYN rather than Gp for all things broth control. I was told it could be removed in office but was likely to be quite painful and difficult so it wasn't hard to convince me to go for GA. Good luck!

And just to add they put a new one in at the same time so likely no impact on fertility!

I had mine removed under General anaesthetic (common in my country) because the string was no longer visible and my cervix had atrophied. I had to go for a scan first to make sure it hadn't fallen out, but it was visible. It was a day procedure, they performed a D&C and replaced it with a new one as I'm not planning on having any more children. I felt quite tired the next day and took it easy but not a big deal. Sorry not sure how it impacts fertility but I don't believe it's usually an issue.

Mine got stuck twice.

The first time I had it replaced. Only a few months ago I had the second one removed and won't have it again.

I was the exact same as you, Dr tried for ages to remove it but couldn't so I had a hysteroscopy at hospital. No anaesthetic required. Think I have a high pain threshold as initial Dr couldn't believe I'd lay there for 20 minutes and not complained about any pain. I would say it was like having a smear test but for a pro-longed period of time.

The second coil caused some unusual discharge, that's how it came to light that it was 'lost' the day after it was removed discharge vanished.

Don't worry, the procedure was very quick.

Good luck
