Sayana Press injection - advice/help?

Sayana press is the depo provera injection that you self administer.
I’ve used it for a year and a half now, and was on depo provera before that without any issue.

I administered 4 (1 year) without any incident. Went to get my refill and since have taken 2 and had issues both times. The first time I was squeezing but it wouldn’t come out so I lifted the needle slightly and had a large swollen, tender area which was due to me injecting too high.

This time I injected without issues but as I removed the injection a fair amount of the medication leaked out and the injection site is much more tender than normal.

LONG, sorry. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything similar. Seems odd that my issues only started when I had to get a new batch. I’m unlikely to continue after this one, just wondering if I need to visit my GP/family planning clinic in the meantime?

I’ve googled it and can’t see any personal experiences.

Bump, though I don’t know anyone IRL who uses this so maybe I’m the only idiot to do this to myself 😬😂

Hi, did you speak to a doctor/nurse in the end? My GP prescribed me this instead of depo provera without telling me, and so I've just used my first one. My husband did it for me as he always used to do my depo (he's trained!). We read up on it and watched the videos but it was painful and when he removed it medication also leaked out and a few hours later I've got a tender lump. I'm sure he pushed the needle all the way in so not convinced it was injected too high. Do you know your batch number? Mine was X49124 X63191 Exp 06/2021

Found some advise that if more than a few drops have leaked you need to use an alternative method of contraception but very little info out there on problems.

The exact same thing has happened to me & I'm about to take my 3rd injection. Following this closely. I'd rather a nurse did it tbh, I know it means booking appointments but at least it's safely done. And I've found it hurts more when I do it.

CoconutGal · 17/03/2019 15:47

Also have you noticed any light bleeding? I've only started having some this week, it's gone from a pink to a brownish colour.

Was called in to see the nurse so mentioned the problem and was advised to do the next injection at 10 weeks in case I didn’t get the full dose. I asked her about whether there were any common issues and she said no and that most people love it because they don’t have to come in. I haven’t had any bleeding but never did with Depo provera either. In terms of pain I’m going to try my stomach next time as I think it might hurt less. Where do you do it? It probably hurts less with the nurse because she does a lot more injections but if you insert the needle confidently (quickly and try to keep it stable) and then squeeze the fluid in slowly it should be better. Saying that, it was so painful in my thigh I told my husband to squeeze it in faster so it was over quicker! Lol. If I do try my thigh again I’ll try a slightly different part of it!

CoconutGal · 19/03/2019 15:26

I usually alternate thighs when I inject but I was considering trying stomach next month when I'm due the next injection. I never had bleeding on depo Provera either but it's very strange with Sanya Press. Almost like egg white & smudges of blood.

Hi
This exact same thing happened to me yesterday, I'm now worried incase I haven't had a full dose

I have been using Sayana Press easily for a little while now. Recently, with my last couple of injections, pressing down the cap has not activated the needle and the contents will not squeeze out. I’ve had this problem 3 times now. Is there something I am doing wrong? None of the 3 needles were from the same batch so it must be user error. The cap has been pushed down firmly until it won’t go any further. I don’t understand what is going wrong :(

Teeg08 · 25/08/2021 19:54

This has just happened to me 😩 I go away tomorrow too and it’s 20.00 did you just Discard?

MrsBohne · 25/08/2021 21:59

Yes I had to throw away and get a new one. I did new one in presence of the nurse to make sure I was doing it correctly and Sod’s law it worked that time 🙄 I’d call your surgery tomorrow as they might be able to get a prescription in to a chemist local to where you are going? Maybe? Worth a shot 🤷🏻‍♀️

Sayana Press has changed my life for the better. I was never officially tested for it, but was thought to have Endometriosis. I used to get very painful cramps, nausea and vomiting if I was foolish enough to eat solids. My periods were very irregular, with only spotting some months but long stretches of bleeding other months. The longest continuous bleeding I had was just over two months. I had to have iron injections because I couldn't get enough from food and tablets. Sayana Press stopped my periods, and I now have no pain, don't need to regularly take time off work, can eat all month around, can work out and play sports without fainting, and even donate blood! I find going to the doctors once every three months very convenient compared to other birth control methods I have tried. I did gain weight, and have to lose it back and then start watching how I eat a bit more carefully - healthexpress.co.uk/sayana-press
