Copper Coil and Infection

Hi all have just had the copper coil fitted after having to come off the pill for three years after very dangerously high blood pressure. I also suffer with depression so GP was hesitant to keep me on anything hormonal. I am 36 single and haven't had any children and not sure if I want any but they are a bit reluctant to sterilise me. The coil was fitted yesterday and I was told there would be pain on insertion which there was, cramping is horrible and bleeding isn't too heavy though. I've heard however there is an increased risk of infection if you have more than one partner which I do, I have several, just wondering if it's a safe infection wise, the doctor said something about PID which got me a bit worried.
