Non hormonal coil experiences?

Hello all, just looking for some advice and experiences of people having had a coil, I'm looking to get the copper one to avoid any hormones as I'm breastfeeding at the moment, and don't fancy hormonal contraception again in general really.

Fitting?
Affects on periods?
Effectiveness?
Any horrible side effects?

Fitting was easy, over in a few minutes. Light bleeding after which soon resolved.

I am having a few issues though, not sure if these are caused by the coil. I've had it for about 10 weeks.

Periods longer and heavier, much more painful too. I've had pain in my side inbetween periods and 3 periods now in 6 weeks. Having an ultrasound on Friday to check all is ok. However I'm currently bleeding heavily and don't know if should reschedule.
