Is the pill making me depressed?

Hoping someone can give some advice. I'm well aware that there is now links to depression wth the pill however I've been taking millinette which is a low dose estrogen pill for about 18 months now and it's been perfect up until around 3 months ago where my mood seems to
Have changed.

It's very strange feeling wouldn't say I am depressed as such but I don't get any chance in emotions it's like I'm numb if this makes sense?

Has anybody experienced this and has changing pills helped? I really
Want to go for the copper coil but I'm such a wuss and have severe anxiety/phobia about any examinations down there after having DS (even get worked up about smear tests!)

Any advice from anyone? X

It could be. I was on the combined pill, had to come off it because of migraines then went on the mini pill. It was only when I came off the pill altogether that I realised the effect it was having on my mood. And yes, it was a flat feeling. After I stopped taking the pill it was like life on it had been in black and white and now everything was in colour. I think the change in mood on the pill was probably gradual so I didn't notice.

I'd suggest a chat with your GP about trying a different brand or coming off altogether.

I had the exact same experience as mirime

I knew I wasn't depressed as such, but I was just going though the motions without caring and I felt like I wasn't me anymore.

I went off the hormonal contraception completely and I came back as me. It was such a relief.

Yes - this was definitely true for me, on Implanon. The flat, muted fuzz, and a really even, uninterested mood. Big events and emotional circumstances just left me cold.

I am back to human emotion and reaction 2 years on. No more hormonal contraceptives for me - it's not worth losing my sense of self.

It is possible, yes.

It is possible that there is another cause, though. Depression has many causes- e.g. 3 months ago coincides with onset of winter, and in some people that can be a trigger.

If you are feeling depressed you should see your doctor x

Do you want more kids? If not it’s your DP that should be getting the snip and dealing with this. Drives me up the wall that this is a “women’s issue” in long term relationships. I may be wrong on this case of course.

I think so, the flatness. Off the Pill, PMS is far worse, a lot lower in mood. But the rest of the time is better, and round ovulation is fab! I have also been through depression and being on the pill isn't as dark as that, things aren't as hopeless nor such an effort, but it's still not as easy as not being on the pi (except the PMS as mentioned, but that's only a couple of days, and I know it should end then, so it seems more bearable.)

This was probably the best bit of coming off the pill, even with the worse PMS. And just feeling that monthly cycle again.

I'm having the mirena next week, but I'm getting peri-menopausal symptoms after having an ovary removed and I'm hoping it will help will that, as it's a lower dose again than the mini pill I'm hoping the side effects will be less again.

Thanks all so much for your responses! Feels good to know it's not just me, it's frustrating trying to explain it to anyone just like you have said it's not depression as such it's like a dull flat feeling. I'm in my 7 day break currently and already feel better so I know it must be my pill. Off to the doctors this week so will see what they say. Xx
