Just condoms

How common a FP method is this?

OP posts:
LoveInTokyo · 17/02/2018 17:01

I did it for about three months and then had a panic moment when I lost one “up there”. After that I got a copper coil.

I would be nervous about doing it if getting pregnant was really out of the question. If it wouldn’t be the end of the world then fine.

yikesanotherbooboo · 17/02/2018 20:14

It's common and works fairly well but imo should only be used with a knowledge of fertile window and in the setting where an unplanned pregnancy wouldn't be a disaster. There are more effective methods for the times in your life when a pregnancy would not be ok.
Over 40 yrs it is probably adequate if used correctly.

DavidPuddy · 17/02/2018 20:17

Has worked for 10 years for me. Nice that there was no hormonal changes when I did want to conceive.

That said, I wouldn't have minded having a baby any time in the last 10 years, so perhaps that adds something to my opinion.

SleepingBooty · 17/02/2018 20:22

We used them for about 12 years with no issues until his vasectomy.

MaisyPops · 17/02/2018 20:26

We used just condoms for a while between me coming off the pill and starting TTC. No issues.

SardineJam · 17/02/2018 20:28

Worked for me well, i had an awful reaction to the coil and various pills and didn't want to affect my body any longer!

AutumnGlitterBall · 17/02/2018 20:28

Ten years and no issues. Got pregnant when I wanted to and went back to them afterwards.

CountFosco · 17/02/2018 20:33

DH and I used condoms for 20 years and had no pregnancy scares. To put that into context we got pregnant first month of trying with each pregnancy so we were very fertile. We are the AIDS generation so condoms were completely normal when we were younger and we never changed. We did swap to the copper coil once our family was complete but that was mid 40s. I never wanted to use hormonal contraception and condoms worked fine for us.

OutComeTheWolves · 17/02/2018 20:46

Been using them for ten years (except for when TTC) and had no problems at all.

Chienrouge · 17/02/2018 20:47

Used them since the birth of DD2 2.5 years ago with no issues.

Arapaima · 17/02/2018 20:50

I’ve always used condoms (with DH and previous boyfriends) as I hate hormonal contraceptives. So that’s 27 years without an unwanted pregnancy Smile

thepatchworkcat · 17/02/2018 20:59

10 years here just with condoms, no issues or scares.

DenPerry · 17/02/2018 21:26

My first DS was a condom break/slip off but it was a cheap brand from a little shop in the Middle East! For years before and after that we have used with no problems.. I make sure we don't do it in fertile window just incase. I love condoms, sex feels sore without them. I hated TTC for number two!

furtile · 23/05/2018 11:13

We use Natural Cycles and then condoms on red days [fertile days]

CressyBessy · 23/05/2018 11:15

If you use them correctly, the success rate is almost 100%.

UndergroundSun · 23/05/2018 11:17

We've been using them for 4 years with no issues.

Katialoo · 23/05/2018 11:22

We always used condoms. Well and sometimes withdrawal. I react very badly to the contraceptive pill and was too scared to try things like the implant after my experience with the pill so condoms are the only contraceptive I will use.

KittenBeast · 23/05/2018 11:30

10 years no unplanned pregnancy.

user1300 · 23/05/2018 19:48

But the lack of spontaneity??

Flexoset · 23/05/2018 19:52

10 years, but I don't like them and now he's in his mid-40s it's harder for him (or rather less hard).

But other methods don't agree with me and this is my rule until if/when he finally gets a vasectomy.

furtile · 23/05/2018 22:36

@Flexoset @Katialoo @Arapaima @SardineJam and others, have you heard of the Natural Cycles app? It great for those that already are used to condoms and helps you identify which days it is safe to go without. You just need to take your temperature everyday. Happy to answer any questions you may have! Ive been using it for over a year Flowers

KittenBeast · 23/05/2018 22:40

Spontaneity is not really a thing when you have 2 young children. Quickies in the kitchen can't happen.

Iwantaunicorn · 23/05/2018 22:45

@furtile, how long have you been using the app? I’m not keen on any more hormones (had ivf and didn’t get on with the pill) but also not terribly keen on condoms! The temperature taking, is it something you have to do when you wake up, or just as you remember in the morning?

furtile · 23/05/2018 23:16

@Iwantaunicorn im on my 14th cycle. You need to take your temp as soon as you wake up, ideally around the same time +-2 hours. I usually take my temp as soon as my alarm goes off, and then snooze 10 more minutes Smile. You can’t temp if you slept much more or less than usually or if you are sick or hungover. It’s best to aim for 5 temps per week. There’s a lot of great info on their website! I’d never convince anyone that Natural Cycles is the best option and it might not be suitable for some people, but for me it is super great and I’m quite ok with the efficacy rate for typical use being 93% Halo. Also, I have a discount code if anyone is interested! www.naturalcycles.com/en/signup/secret?code=referralid30&referral=67dd635dd95743059e65c92c1084b759

NecklessMumster · 23/05/2018 23:21

20 years no problems. Spontaneity not a problem, it doesn't exactly take long and you can put it on for him.
