Injection or implant

At the moment I am on the mini pill Noriday but I am getting awful mood swings with it. We definitely don't want any more children so I am thinking something that lasts longer. My DH is thinking about a vasectomy but need something in the meantime. I've previously had a coil but DH could feel the strings during sex so was very off putting for him. I have been to docs today who said my best options are either the injection (would be Depo) or implant but I really don't know which would be better. Does anybody have any experience if either? TIA

Implant i bleed like a tap

I had the implant and did nothing but bleed as well. Had to take the pill with it to stop the bleeding which annoyed me as I didn't want the pill anymore which is why I had the implant!

I had the depo for about 3 years before coming off to have a baby. It stopped my periods almost totally aside from a few breakthrough bleeds here and there. Better than having to remember a pill everyday but you do have to remember to book the nurse appt to have the injection. I put on about a stone on it which came off very quickly once I stopped it (mostly bloating/fluid retention).
I am now on the implant. I like that I don't have to think about contraception for 3 years. Have had no bleeding at all but am breastfeeding so don't know if that is having an effect. I would recommend it so far but have only been on it for about 4 months.

I'd go for the implant. Heard of too many people putting on weight on depo or worse, not having their fertility restored after they came off it.

I've had both and they were fine, but I'd go for implant over depo given you've already had a bad reaction to the mini-pill. If you do react badly to the hormones, you can get the implant out again and the hormones will leave your system fast, but you'll have to wait a few months for depo to wear off.

I'm on my 3rd implant now. For me it's been ideal. I've had no bleeding and no other side effects.

Bled constantly for 9months on the implant. They also refused to remove it because it is apparently so expensive so it has to be kept in for at least a year. At least with the injection if the effects didn’t wear off after the first round you could be in control and decide not to go for the second. I have never tried it as it delays fertility and I really don’t know when I would like to start trying for children. But I have so many friends and family who are really happy with it. Best of luck

I’ve had both also, with depo I had no periods and very few other side effects other than weight gain. The implant, I’m getting removed soon because the side effects have been shit but I think everyone responds to the hormones differently. At least with depo, it only lasts for 3 months (if I remember correctly) at a time so if you don’t like you it you don’t need to go for another one whereas I’ve heard of a few people having a battle getting the doctor to take the implant out. Hope whatever you decide works well for you

I had mine out after 10 months no questions asked, I had been worried they’d say no. I don’t know if it was easier for me because I was having it out for mental health reasons.

When they told me I had to have the coil put in like 6years later though they said they don’t do this any more because they have “realised the adverse affects it can have” and the nurse basically said they have had so many law suits it ends up cheaper in the long run now to just remove it when the girl asks. The dr did insist on removing the coil after one week so things have definitely changed !
