First period after having a Mirena Coil fitting

Hi, I had a coil fitted 2 and a half weeks ago. I had very little spotting afterwards and not really any pain. My period was due a week later and it came a little early and was light. Then it got heavier as it normally is. However it's not stopped, I'm still bleeding. Everything I read suggests I could bleed now for 6 months!!! What have others experienced please? Will it stop or is this it?

Hi. I have not had the mirena but I have had a copper coil, the implant and other things. I bled for 9months on the implant and then a further 2 once removed. It can certainly happen and it won’t necessarily stop after 6months. Some people will bleed for the duration of use. Who ever fitted it should have told you this but it’s there job to get these things into people so they don’t. With everything they say the settling in period is at least 3months though (but a year with the mirena) so it’s very early days and when I had my coil I was bleeding by the time I sat up after the procedure so I New it wasn’t going to stop. If I were you I would give it a few more weeks (don’t stress) and then go back to the dr if you are continually bleeding and it’s not stopping in between. They can give you the pill on top of it to give you the extra progesterone to keep the womb lining in place. Because the mirena has such little hormone this is ok to do for s few months or they can give you Norethisterone (progesterone) to do the same thing. Neither of these things have ever worked for me with any of the methods I’ve tried but they might work for you until it settles and then you can keep it for the rest of the time if that’s what you want to do. Do you still have other options if this one doesn’t work out ? Best of luck x

I had the Mirena in early September last year. I bled lightly after it was inserted (for a few hours) but not had any bleeding since. So it’s stopped my periods completely! It affects everyone differently. I tried the mini pill before the coil which made me bleed for weeks!

Hi Littlebit,

How are you now? I’m exactly the same as you and don’t want to bleed for months on end!

I would like to know how you are now too please! I'm having the exact same reaction as yourself and don't want to be bleeding for 6 months plus! Did your condition improve? Xxx
