Surely this can't be normal? Copper coil

Hello. So I had the copper coil inserted just over a month ago. A few days later I had the mother of all periods which lasted a week. A few days later I started bleeding again for a few days. And so it began. I get a day or two off and then out of nowhere I'm on again for a couple of days.
Now I'm back to what I assume to be my "normal" period and I can't leave the flipping loo. I'm using tampons the size of Italy and they're lasting 30 minutes if that.

Is this normal? I know they said irregular and heavy periods but I wish they'd just said "sorry Jenny, you're now going to bleed forever, mwahahaha!"

No expert, but have had copper coils in the past. It doesn't sound normal to me. When I had the coil, I got heavier periods & had to use a super plus tampon and a pad at the same time for the first few days, but then it calmed down and periods didn't last any longer than usual and were no more frequent, but I have polycystic ovaries and long cycles so I'm not sure if my experience is reflective of the majority of coil users. If I were you, I would go back to the GP or clinic where you had it fitted for advice.

My mum had hers removed due to this sort of issue.

Thanks for the responses ❤️ I'm not in any pain so I'm assuming it's not moved or got itself up to mischief but it's crazy. I've got three kids three and under so spending a day on the loo really isn't an option.
I'll call the gp on Monday and see what they say.

Good luck Jenny!

I have much heavier periods with a coil and I've had one or 2 geysers. I have 2 light days, 1 medium, 2 xtra xtra (full moon cup hourly) then 1 light. More or less.

JennyLane · 22/07/2017 10:56

@Wallywobbles thanks for your input. Was it always like that for you or did things start off a bit all over the place?

Not sure really. It was noticeably heavier. I've never been v regular. I use an app to monitor it and i appear to me regular than I used to be.

I have a copper coil, put in 4 years ago. My periods are not as extreme as this, but they are heavier than they were before - I generally get 1/2 very heavy days (which for me means double protection needed and checked/changed every couple of hours). That said, I'm 43, so things may be changing due to age I guess.

I can't remember exactly but I think the first few months may have been more intense and unpredictable - certainly I remember reading online that things can take a while to settle down after insertion. If you've only had the coil a month, I wouldn't worry too much. Do call the GP for a chat though.

Thanks so much for your responses. It's very reassuring. Things "seem" to have calmed down a little this afternoon so hopefully this is all just the settling in period. I'll chat with the gp next week and I need to book my six week check too so hopefully she can have a peek and make sure it's not gone awol 😂

I've had three copper coils. With my most recent one, I had on/off bleeding for a month followed by a month or two of heavy periods and then it settled down. But I don't think they were as heavy as all that, and with very heavy bleeding after a coil, there's the chance of an infection, and very heavy bleeding might be a symptom, so it's worth calling 111 to check it out.

JennyLane · 22/07/2017 17:09

@BroomstickOfLove thank you. It has died down now in that I've managed to escape the loo to feed the kids. The first mother of all periods I had I had to change hourly and today was about twenty minutes for three hours but then slowed down out of no where.
