Copper coil periods - is this "standard"?

Have had a copper coil for a few months now but only had two periods with it as I was breastfeeding.

Just wondering if this is quite normal?

My period starts very very light and with spotting really. Then after a couple of days of light blood it'll get slightly heavier but nothing too bad.

After a week of this when I would expect it to be coming to an end it very suddenly gets heavy for 2-3 days. Im talking several changes of pads a day and if im not quick then it leaks.

Standing up and feeling a large gush of blood or just walking around and feeling it all coming out and hoping to god its not going to leak.

Ive never experienced this in my life except after childbirth so wondering if its normal with the copper coil?

Luckily I have no pain or cramps just loads of blood.

I have been caught out as last period I wasnt aware this was going to happen so after a week when my pads were running low I didnt bother to buy more as I thought after a week it would be stopping soon but actually It became suddenly heavy within an hour or two.

This period I was prepared that this could happen again and I was right. After a week the heaviness starts and is still going two days later.

I dont mind too much. Its the best of a bad bunch of possible side effects from hormonal contraception ime but just wondering if this is my new normal or if it is likely to settle down after a few months.

It's normal. My periods have been hideous since I got the copper coil they are really heavy and last much longer

How are your iron levels with that? Do you find you get anaemic?
I have just had a copper coil inserted but no periods yet, still partially BF

I think it's normal for the first six months or so while it settles down. I had increasingly long (27 days!) and heavy periods when I had a copper coil. I couldn't put up with bleeding almost continously for six months so had it removed but apparently things would have improved if I'd waited.

I think it's in the range of normal, yes. I had very heavy periods with the copper coil. So much so, that I ended up with anemia and the GP recommended having it removed. I had it in for over 2 years so it wasn't a case of just waiting until things settled down for me.

Everyone's different on it I've heard. Mine are fine. Just a day longer, although this month it's been a couple of days longer. I do get the slow start with spotting though.

TMI - but mine seem thinner somehow?

The duration between mine is getting longer over the last 8 months.
Started at a 28 day cycle.
Last month was 35 days and I'm up to day 31 with no period (but all the pre period symptoms).
Curious...
