Coil experience?

I've tried every pill under the sun and could only settle with micronor. I have my daughter nearly every years ago and since being back on it I've put on loads of weight and become extremely spotty.

I'm thinking I may get the marina coil, can anyone tell me what they have been like with it?

Yeah I have had it for 3 years.

Good things
No periods at all
Hardly any menstrual cramps anymore
No hassle

Bad things
A little bit more spotty but it calmed down after 6 months
Drop in libido

But overall I'm happy with it and will keep it for 5 years, and then consider another one or asking if DH will have the snip

Sent me loopy! Really extreme mood swings and constant bleeding. I managed it for 8 weeks before demanding my GP remove it. I know lots of women who have them and love them but it wasn't for me. I'm quite sensitive to hormonal contraceptives it seems.

Good points:
Didn't get pregnant

Bad points:
Spotted daily for the 1st 6 months
Had light periods still - spotting for a week or so
Threads irritated like hell making it feel like I had thrush

Had it for 6 months then had it removed.

Good = lighter bleeding at first, boobs grew (bonus for me), didn't get pregnant.

Bad = developed huge cervical polyp and inflammation of the cervix from the strings, didn't gain weight but waist thickened, hair became brittle, bouts of constant thrush, bleeding started to become heavier again.

Ah I love my mirena coil! It was a bit painful to put in (3/10), but other than that it has been fine. Had some cramping for a few weeks (not constantly, but days on and off), and then fine since. I had very light periods in the beginning, and now it's mainly just spotting a bit randomly. It's not had any effect on my moods, libido, anything. I'm very happy :)

I have a mirena.

Pros: never got pregnant, periods didn't disappear but became very light so I can just use a towel instead of industrial strength tampon plus thick towel as I used to have to, never have to think about contraception for years

Cons: low libido so not much need for said contraception, PMS and mood swings (although that could also be age/stress-related).

Loved my mirena, much lighter periods, no side effects, only had it out to ttc. Does hurt going in but no more than a smear (at least for me, probably depends on the doc doing it)

It is the best thing by far I have ever used. No period for almost 5 years and don't ever want them back tbh (endometriosis sufferer). Fitting is fairly harrowing though (or it was ime having had an elcs for dd), meant to be having mine changed in may, but am seriously contemplating just getting it out and getting pregnant instead to avoid periods for a bit longer (only half joking)!

I'm on my 3rd. 1 and 2 were perfect - my period would last less than a day and I didn't have any other side effects on it. I had #3 fitted in Oct and since then I've spotted a lot of the time since with a heavy bleed lasting about 5 days each month. I'm really disappointed with this one. I've no idea if they've changed the formula of it or what. I know they say to give it 6 months to settle in but the previous two were fine from day 1.

Still, I shouldn't complain as my periods without it are 2 weeks long, heavy, cripplingly painful and life-ruining (not to mention clothes-ruining) so I'll take any improvement.

Just had mine taken out after 2.5 years. Loved it for the most part - no bleeding at all, less water retention, less PMS. If my acne hadn't flared up so badly I'd be keeping it!

Oh and insertion and removal are not much worse than a smear, slight sharp pain and then a bit of cramping.

Sorry to hijack OP but I'm thinking of getting a coil too, I'm sensitive to hormones so was leaning towards a copper though. Does anyone have one and can share how they find it? I'm mostly worried about having it fitted

Hi I had the mirena coil for 7 months had it removed early Feb and then had my period the 8th Feb 17 not had my period for this month yet done pregnancy test and one very very faint positive and the rest negative we r ttc. Could anybody shed some light to what may / might be going on please

I have a copper coil, and would definitely recommend it. Currently on my second one, which I actually found more painful getting fitted than the first! Maybe 5 years has made me forget though...

No side affects at all from it, I like the fact that there's no hormones affecting me. I had the implant for a few years and piled on weight, and had zero sex drive. After that I would like to avoid any hormonal contraceptives.

Should add that the reason it was sorer getting fitted this time was they tried to fit a 10yr one, but it wouldn't fit

So after a bit of pushing, she gave up and fitted a 5 year one. So it all went on a bit longer than normal.

(She was determined to fit one because I hadn't realised that you are not meant to have sex for a week before the fitting, and in theory I could still have had live sperm in me, which if old coil was removed and new one not able to be fitted, could have resulted in pregnancy...)

Cooper coil. Very happy. No more hormones for me. Heavy periods for 2 days, last about 8 days overall.
