Taking contraception to stop periods.

Does anyone take contraceptives to stop their periods?
If so what do you take?
Any side effects?

ofcourse there are side effects like weight gain and other side effects of the pill.
i have never taken the pill to stop periods or to stop pregnancy
the side effects are too risky so that put me off
