Tell me your experience of vasectomy please

Hi, looking for advice, pros and cons and experiences please.

DP and I have 4 kids between us (none together, but don't want more). I've been on pill pre-kids and in between, and mirena for last 10 years. Just had it removed - various reasons but several unexplained ailments and end of it's useful life anyway.

DP hates condoms. I'm not keen as it breaks the mood somewhat but we always use them. I want to give my body a break from hormonal contraception just to see if my unexplained ailments sort themselves out (depression, night sweats, insomnia).

DP is totally against vasectomy. Is worried it will be painful and will reduce his libido. I know it's a quick job with usually great results.

How can I at least get him to consider it? Am I being totally selfish in asking him to do this? How do blokes feel after the snip?

My husband was really reluctant but then after our two children were both very traumatic deliveries he saw the light and manned up.
Got the snip. Actual Op was fine he said, had a mild infection a few days after which was more sore but not agony and cleared up quickly with antibiotics. Sex after for first time was a bit scary for him as he was afraid it would hurt... but he said although there was a dull ache it wasn't off putting... blood in the ejaculate was a bit more off putting But that was more noticed by me than him anyway (sorry tmi)

Four years on no regrets and no loss of libido nor pain or anything at all.

And no babies despite us never quite getting round to handing in the samples post op!!!

Very bad here. At least one in ten get permanent pain following the op. It's still surgery and no one should be forced into it.

Ive had pain for 4 years now and it's also damaged my testosterone levels so I've had a fight to get on hormone replacement.

It's been found that the snip can affect testosterone. I know of a few people that have constant pain and a fair few with Testosterone issues. my T is about a quarter of what it should be now. Main side effect is exhaustion. Doctors dont like prescribing it.

It's ruined our sex life. The pain is pretty severe and it's a very common side effect that can't be cured.

I wouldn't recommend the snip on the basis of the regularity of pain after the operation which is permanent.

I wouldn't recommend any surgery unless it was essential. My pain specialist says you won't find any pain specialist having vasectomy due to the high incidence of pain issues. That says it all really.

We both wish we'd stuck with condoms.

My ex had it done a few years ago. We were back in the sack the next day (still protected for however long, I forget).

He had no problems at all, short or long term.

My dh had it done 10 years ago after the birth of dc3. No problems, no side effects, just no more babies , yay! We would certainly recommend it ;)

Maybe extreme but my ex had his snip in the morning and he was up for sex the same night!! No change in performance or sex drive then or in the years to come!!

Became an ex for being a twat and nothing to do with his balls!!

You can't really get him reconsider, because it is his body and his choice.

If you think permanent surgical removal of fertility is the right option, perhaps you could look into having your tubes tied?
