Implant or coil?

Hi, went to the go today to ask for long term contraception, mainly yo control heavy periods, he has recommended the implant or coil. I have tried the pill and mini pill but had bad head aches with the pill and continuess bleeding on the mini pill.

I don't really know much about the implant, can anyone tell me what it's like, does it hurt when they put it in, are there side effects?

I'm not keen on the coil so am hoping the implant is more suitable, does it stop your periods or slow them at all?

I have a Jaydess coil. It was very uncomfortable when they put it in but I don't really have periods now and I don't seem to have any other side effects. It took about 6 weeks of spotting and feeling hormonal to settle down but has been great since- definitely worth considering I think Smile

Hi,
I currently have the Implant and I hate it. I've had very irregular bleeding like 6 weeks of random bleeding and my skin is horrendous Hmm
I went for the implant as scared about having the coil fitted but I think if my symptoms haven't calmed down by sept (will be 1 year in) then I'll have to have the coil.
It doesn't hurt to put in just a little scratch for anaesthetic and a bit of pressure and some bruising for a few days after but it's not bad at all.

Everyone's different and reacts differently to things so I hope you find the right contraceptive for youSmile

I've had both.

I'm not overly squeamish so neather being inserted bothered me. Implant is a bit uncomfortable after the anesthetic wears off, then was tender for a day or two after. Initially I had no periods, this lasted about 18 months. Then I started spotting fairly frequently, not much, but enough to need a panty liner pretty much every day. I came off it after about 6months of this to ttc, but i hated the spotting. Felt dirty all the time and would have much rather had a normal monthly period.

I now have the copper coil as I tried the implant after pregnancy and had constant migraines an had to have it removed after three months. Love that I'm free of all the hormones, have definitely noticed a difference. Periods were initially very heavy for a day or two (think super tampax lasting half an hour) then would settle to a more manageable flow a couple of days after. I'm probably 6-7months in an it's loads better. Alot lighter, to what I'd consider my 'normal' flow, however I would say my periods probably lasted two days or so longer.

Overall both worked for me at different points, however if your periods are already heavy I'd say the implant was favourable, although it's probably different for everyone.
