Mirena Coil & periods

Hi
I had the Mirena coil fitted nearly 5 weeks ago and I'm having my first period since then. I know that periods can last longer with this coil but I've been on mine nearly 3 weeks now. Is this common?
Many thanks

Sorry buttress I'm a Mirena user who doesn't get periods at all but I didn't want to read and run. Perhaps over time it will settle down. I'm about to have my third fitted so I'm a HUGE fan Grin.

Hi,

I had a Mirena coil fitted about eight months ago for heavy bleeding. My first period lasted about three weeks, as did the next few. My periods now are much lighter but I still bleed for well over a week each time, with some spotting in between. I always have a pad handy - and most days wear something 'just in case'

It's a pain, but I haven't had any further flooding or clotting which had made my life rather miserable.

I hope things are better for you!

I had mine (fitted when I was on a period), 2 months ago. Had a light spotting type bleed for a few weeks a couple of weeks after fitting. This stopped but there was nothing for a couple of weeks but I am now currently having a really heavy period which started a couple of days ago.

I have read that it can take 6 months for your body to get used to the coil. I have never had one before and had it 10 weeks after giving birth, so think my body is all over the place anyway.

Sorry I can't over any help to you - but I am basically experiencing the same as you and think it's as common as having no periods. It just depends on the individual.

Hi, I've had mirena coil for nearly 2 years and my period have never stopped, until now that is. Not had a period for 9 weeks have pregnancy symptoms but done 3 tests but all negative got the doctors nxt week to find out why they've suddenly stopped.

I bled daily for about 4 months after having the coil fitted. I did some research and found that it is very common and can last for upto 6 months, I was unprepared for this -it definately was not explained beforehand.
I have had the coil in for about a year now and after the first 4 months I have had very little bleeding, just a couple of hours light bleeding every now and again.
