The pill at 46 v the coil

I went to the doc to get a prescription for the pill as I have recently stopped breast feeding DD 2.5.

the locum GP basically refused to discuss the pill and bamboozled me into making an appointment to have the coil fitted (which I have cancelled).

I don't want the coil (I have birth injuries and had retained placenta only diagnosed three weeks after birth) and a terrible infection for four months and I dint want any more unnecessary examinations as I'm still a bit traumatised.

why was the GP so keen on the coil?

I'm 46, healthy, slim and a non smoker.

There is also the option of the mini pill that can be used up to age 55.

No need for the coil if you dont want one.

What ilove says. Plus GPS are being made to push LARC and have to give information to every female of child bearing age.

But why was the doc so anti the pill and pro the coil when I was clear I didn't want it? It was a total waste of his and my time. I feel like I now need to battle for the pill.

they didnt used to really prescribe the pill for women over the age 35 so it may be that he wasnt up to date with current information about the pill in older women.

Maybe print off the info and go back to an appointment with a different doctor and see if they will prescribe the pill for you

Have you got a contraception nurse at your surgery? Might be worth a try.

I was in the pill in my 40s and did get a DVT so be careful.

I'm surprised a locum booked the appt for you too sounds really odd. Where I work you need an appt with the nurse first then she books in the appt, which has to go into a specific minor ops slot. Think you just got a dodgy one I'm afraid as a locum he wouldn't need to worry about increasing the amount of patients on LARC.

Would have to wait hours at the family planning place. I don't have hours to spare. The process at surgery is to see the GP and be referred for a fitting appointment with the nurse.

I Ssae a young female GP yesterday and came away with a prescription for the combined pill, no questions just good info on the risks. As I'm neither obese nor a smokerI can stay on it til 50 (which is only three and a half years away eek).
