Copper coil insertion

I am having a copper coil inserted tomorrow and I am terrified, particularly as I haven't had children. Can anyone give me any tips on what to expect and how to minimise the pain?

take something like ibuprofen an hour or so beforehand and try to relax. I found it slightly uncomfortable but not painful. Good luck

Thanks. I am already doing that. I almost wish they hadn't told me how it is inserted as the thought of it is making me wince. I keep telling myself that even if it's agony, childbirth would be worse ;-)

Get it done at a gum clinic rather than gp as they are usually more experienced. Take painkillers. Prepare for some cramps afterwards. Good luck!

i have one and haven't had children. it was uncomfortable, but there was only a brief moment of actual pain (when they pushed through the cervix iirc) but it was more like the pain of having your legs waxed - brief, not too bad, and dissipated quickly. the part i disliked most in fact was when the folded-up coil was released - it wasn't painful at all but it was peculiarly unpleasant having something go 'twang' right inside you like that - but again, it was over in a split-second

prepare for cramps and bleeding as you would for your period (painkillers, hot water bottle, however you would normally manage). i have found that my periods are now a bit different - for the first day of my period they are much heavier and more uncomfortable, but after that they settle down for the final few days

just be as calm as you can, my GP was very experienced and there was a nurse sitting next to my head the whole time. there was a running commentary the whole time of what was going on. don't be afraid to say that you're really nervous, and if it's too uncomfortable to bear tell them.

I am going to a GUM clinic. I am taking ibuprofen before and after. I kow it;s not that bad and quite brief. It just sounds horrible!

i was warned it would be uncomfortable, the dr also said after examining me that she thought it would be a difficult insertion...... but i didn't even feel a thing! A nice surprise :) How did it go?

Well mine was pretty horrendous! They tried to put the 10 year one in but I screamed so much they put the smaller 5 year one in. I was in so much pain that my blood pressure dropped and I had to lie down for 10 minutes afterwards. I am getting cramps today which are quite bad but OK with ibuprofen.

I am glad I don’t need to worry about getting pregnant for 5 years though.

The consultant and the nurse were lovely and were even kind enough to say I'd done well when I actually screamed most of the way through. The consultant was very quick, the whole thing took less that five minutes.
