Hello.

I'd mainly discarded the option of having a coil fitted; I'm prone to UTIs, not interested in having a 'device' inside me and I've heard horror stories.

My husband went to the doctor to find out about a vasectomy and the doctor suggested that he encourage me to have the coil fitted. So he's come home to tell me this and I do feel I must investigate further, before I force him to have the op!

I would like to hear about people's experiences please.

I'm on my second Mirana coil and I can say it's the best kind of birth control I've been on I don't have to worry about forgetting to take it or follow up injection appointments. The only down side I have is I will have a bout of thrush every now and then. I am prone to UTI's but have had no more than I usually would. I'm funny about having things inside me but u can't feel it. I have mine fitted at family planning as they fit far more than the gp's. It's simple and quick with maybe period like pains after for a few days. It takes that worry away of getting caught pregnant and has made my sex life more enjoyable because of this.

I had the copper coil for four years, no problems but period cramps were worse, never had a uti.

Personally I really didn't like the idea of a coil after a friend got a really bad infection and needed an op to get it out.
I had an implant fitted a month ago and so far so good. I should have my period now but nothing- no pmt no pain no period. I do have a couple of spots but I can put up with those if that's all I get. I'm not counting my chickens yet though as it's still early days but atm I would recommend.

I'm about to have my copper coil removed as I bleed almost constantly with it. I've persevered for over a year in the hope that it would improve but the bleeds are getting longer and heavier so it has to go.

Am toying with the idea of switching to the Mirena coil but not 100% sure yet.

I'm on my second copper coil and it's great, totally fuss free. I had heavy periods for the first few months of this one, but a year in and they're pretty light. No infections either time, one trip to sexual health clinic and I'm sorted for 5 yrs, no chemicals.

Had 2 copper coils for 2 years each with no problems except slightly longer periods. Then had a mirena but got it removed after 5 months as I thought it was possibly responsible for absolute loss of sex drive. Now back to a copper coil again and glad to be hormone free once more

Glad you started this as I was just about to ask the same question. I can't rake anything hormone based as it gives me migraines so thought other than condoms the coil might be the answer. Worried though as you hear stories of pregnancy and heavy bleeding etc.

I love it, this is my second which was put in under GA which is definately the way to go if you can

No periods
No weight gain
No PMT
No remembering to take anything

I also suffer migraines but can have the mirena because the hormone released only locally

I had the mirena coil for 6 months and it was body awful for me, I nearly fainted after the fitting then had awful cramps all day that paracetamol didn't touch. After that had settled down at first it seemed OK but then started with constant spotting and my mental health was progressively getting worse, constant very low mood and anxiety, I think if I'd left it in longer I would have had to see my gp about it, also literally no libido.

However my body does not seem to agree with progesterone contraceptives, I tried the mini pill and that didn't work for me and I tried a combined with higher progesterone levels that also didn't work for me.
