C-section and sterilisation

Anyone had both at the same time? This is purely academic as not yet sure if pg with dc3, but dh would not even consider a vasectomy and it would be my 3rd section anyway I thought it would be practical to see if it could be done.

Are consultants generally happy to do it? How watertight is the result (there is no way I'd want a #4)? What are the pros and cons.

Please don't ask why dh won't get his tubes tied - I know men can be funny about these things and, as the one most vehemently against more children I think the onus is probably on me - he'd happily keep going .

I have no first hand experience but I was offered this when last pregnant. As it turns out they decided to induce and gave birth without c section but they were willing to do it.

Since having ds dh has decided to get himself done but I'm thinking about doing it as well as due to horrendous pregnancies / births I cannot get pregnant again and am petrified of the thought! The failure rate for vasectomy is 1 in 2000 and for sterilisation 1 in 200 I believe I read.

I think if you give them enough notice of your intention they can be fully prepared.

I asked at dd2's section to be sterilised, they refused explaining that everything is so swollen from the pregnancy that the failure rate is higher.

Ironically, the same team did it for my friend a year later, not even mentioning what they told me.

The only difference was that she was having her third & I had my second.

My friend hasn't had any issues, but I did envy her as she didn't have to go through a separate procedure to have it done, where as I did & I felt horrible for a few days.

slightly off topic but how did you get offered steralisation? i asked after having my twins but the gp told me they were no longer given on the nhs and that the mirena coil was recommended instead

The implant is more reliable than female sterilisation, and presumably cheaper, so I can see why the NHS might be reluctant.

I recently had a c section with my second baby (age 31) and was rather shocked when the consultant nipped in to see me 20 minutes before surgery to ask if I would like to be sterilised whilst in theatre as it's easy to do whilst they're in there. I was like 'errrrrrmmmmm, not really?!' What a bloody time to ask you?! And different if I was maybe on 4th or 5th baby.

it never came up, and it was my second c-sec after an emergency one 14 months earlier. possibly like many things on the nhs it depends on the area you're in?
