Mirena worry

I had the mirena coil fitted at the end of July and my periods have got slightly lighter each month since. I haven't had a period at all this month, which I would have assumed was ok while on the mirena, but I had an internal ultrasound 3 weeks ago (due to having some pain since the coil was fitted) and the sonographer told me that I had recently ovulated. I thought the mirena stopped periods by preventing ovulation but is it also normal to ovulate but not bleed? I can still feel the strings so can't be pregnant, just concerned as it's now been 3 weeks and I know I ovulated before that so should have had a period by now.

If it's normal, that's fine, but I'm confused.

Thank you

Hi Amatuer

Don't worry - the Mirena works predominantly by thinning out the lining of the womb to prevent implantation. The majority of women continue to ovulate while using it, and it's perfectly possible to have ovulation without bleeding, because of the very thin womb lining.

The other side of the coin is that, because ovulation usually continues, there will still be cyclical hormonal changes, so it's possible to get symptoms like breast tenderness/PMT etc in a cyclical monthly pattern, but without any bleeding.
