Mirena threads lost and time for removal��

Have had mirena for over 5 years. Time for replacement but the threads are gone.
Anyone been through this as no idea how they remove it without them. And no anaesthetic I'm told?!

Anyone??

Watching as think my threads have disappeared too.

I haven't been through this, but can give you an idea of what might happen (assuming the Mirena is still in the womb and hasn't been expelled)....sometimes the threads are just caught up in the cervical canal and can easily be brought down with forceps inserted just into the cervix, which shouldn't feel any different to having a smear really. Otherwise, if they're inside the uterus, a device called a thread retriever can be inserted into the uterine cavity to try to hook them down - this is a flexible plastic hook (not sharp) and doesn't feel any different to having your womb measured during the Mirena fitting (ie. can cause some cramping pain but unlikely to be severe if your womb has coped with having a Mirena in already!).

Eurgh - thank you for explaining how they'll get it out. I've still got a few years left before having to try and get it out. Do the threads ever work their way down naturally?

I have recently had an ultrasound and xray to try and locate my mirena. They have decided its in my pelvis but not necessarily where it should be. now need referring for a trans-vaginal scan to see where it is. Think I will tell them to take it out once they find it!

I never could find the threads, but when it came to removal time they didn't seem to have any problems.

me too. due for changing in April but threads disappeared a few weeks after it was put in.
had dildo scan and it's still there but never saw the threads again.

Wondering if I should contact the doc and get a scan. When I had a smear a few years ago they looked for it but couldn't see it. They just said to come back if my cycle changed.

they can migrate and end up places they shouldnt be so I would get a scan to reassure it is still where it is supposed to be

Mine got lost about a month ago. The GP couldn't find it either so I've got a scan booked for next month...only they've now reappeared . I've been advised to go for the scan anyway and I'm looking forward to finding out just what's going on!

Mellow - feeble question but did it hurt?

They had to use the thread finder thingy with me a couple of years back, was less uncomfortable than having it fitted. What was more uncomfortable was waiting for the nurse to fetch it into the doc when she realised she needed it. Those few minutes felt like forever on the bed knees akimbo speculum (sp?) still in place but slipping

Eww. I fondly remember my first mirena (removed about 10 years ago) which had reached the end of its five year life cycle and given me pid in the process .

The bog standard family planning clinic at the hospital couldn't manage it and I had to be sent to the other one where they had a bigger tool .

Juggling - it didn't hurt as such, it was uncomfortable - though not as much as being put in. Felt a bit achy afterwards like period pain but it was all manageable.

I've had my new mirena all of two weeks and already it's disappeared. I need to have a scan to find out where it's gone. Pissed off is an understatement.....
