HELP!! Mirena has gone missing...

HenriettaPye · 03/09/2013 17:53

I've had the mirena for 4 months. It's not been agreeing with me- heavy bleeding, headaches, spots, moodiness, weight gain etc so I went to the doctor today and told her how much I hate it so she said I would be best to have it removed.

I stripped my bottom half, let the doctor have a rummage around and then she broke the news that she can't find it Sad and I have to be referred to gynaecology now

So could be one of two things

1- It may have come out without me realising, meaning I have been having unprotected sex and could possibly be pregnant

2- it's got lost inside my body

Has this happened anyone else? What happens next??

Sad

Bumping for you!

Sorry, my method of choice is mainly abstinence from PIV & crossed fingers, so I'm not much help here, but didn't want your post to disappear, as I'm sure its not unheard of.

Bramblesinforrin · 03/09/2013 19:15

Yes. Mine went wandering after an enthusiastic smear test. I had a dr do the internal rummage then was referred on quickly for a scan which located it higher up in the womb - at the top. The medics are happy with that and will leave it there until it needs to come out. Apparently they have a special device thing which will sort it (although given that I needed a general to get the first one in, I think I will push for a general again!). So hopefully all will be well for you.

my strings cannot be found either but I am sure it is still inside. I am getting referred for an ultrasound to locate exactly where it is.

magicstars · 03/09/2013 19:55

Yep happened to me! It was gone when I had my 6 week check so the nurse made an urgent referral for me to be scanned but it took about a month for the appointment. Thankfully I wasn't pg. I had an ultrasound, then X-ray. Good luck

HenriettaPye · 03/09/2013 19:57

Thanks everyone, just wondering if its higher up in the womb, how are they going to get it out? Blush

Have this too. Went to the Dr today because I couldn't find the strings, neither could she! now have to have a scan and use condoms, yuck. Sad

HenriettaPye · 06/09/2013 21:18

Hi thefemale, when is your scan for? I'm still waiting for a referral letter to gynocology where I'm assuming I will be scanned!

ilovepowerhoop · 06/09/2013 22:09

I am still waiting for my appointment too

alwaysonmymind · 06/09/2013 22:15

A family member discovered that hers was missing when she discovered she was pregnant. Shocked is an understatement

thefemaleJoshLyman · 09/09/2013 23:20

My scan is next Monday, they have an ultrasound clinic at my GP surgery. Fairly sure that I am not pregnant, did an HPT two weeks ago, no symptoms and no sex since then Wink . Dr thnks it is still there but hidiing Hmm .

thefemaleJoshLyman · 18/09/2013 23:17

Had my scan, mirena still safely there. How will they get it out in 3 years?

TwoStepsBeyond · 19/09/2013 01:10

Good news! I'm sure they have their ways, could they not tell you while you we're there?

HenriettaPye · 19/09/2013 11:56

Glad they found it, I'm still waiting for an appointment AngryAngry

my appointment is on Monday at 10am and I have to drive about 30 miles to get to the hospital. I have to have a full bladder so that will be a fun journey!

ilovepowerhoop · 23/09/2013 10:08

at hospital waiting for my scan. Think I am going to pee myself if they dont hurry up! Already had to pee as nearly wet myself in the car on the way to the hospital

HenriettaPye · 23/09/2013 11:29

Oh let me know how it goes. I'm STILL waiting Angry

had my ultrasound and because they couldnt see the coil properly I had to get an x-ray as well. The x-ray shows that the coil is in my pelvis but not necessarily where it is supposed to be. I have to go back to my GP to get a trans-vaginal ultrasound scan arranged to pinpoint exactly where it is. Have been advised to use other contraception in the meantime. The hospital I was at today dont do the trans-vaginal scan so will have to go somewhere else for that. Am tempted to tell them that once they find it they can take it back out!

HenriettaPye · 23/09/2013 13:50

Oh dear Ilove, nightmare! I have been using extra protection anyway, just incase!! Do you have to wait for this other appointment to come through now?

OP posts:
ilovepowerhoop · 23/09/2013 14:05

the hospital I was at today (30 miles away from home!) will send a report to my gp and then I have to speak to the gp to get them to refer for the trans-vaginal scan. They said it can take up to 2 weeks for the report to get to the gp though.

I think the coil is still working anyway as I have very little bleeding, etc - just dont like the thought of it floating about in there though with no way to get it out again without lots of rummaging about.

HenriettaPye · 23/09/2013 20:27

Lucky you only having to wait two weeks- I rang up today to chase my appointment and was told I won't be seen until JANUARY at the earliest!! I'm the same, I do still think it's up there somewhere as little bleeding and I am getting horrendous headaches which is why I need the blooming thing out!!

OP posts:
ilovepowerhoop · 23/09/2013 20:34

January - thats ridiculous! Are you being referred by your GP?

ilovepowerhoop · 23/09/2013 20:35

p.s. I wasnt referred to Gynae but just to a radiology department at the hospital - they did the scans and then report back to the GP

BabylonReturns · 23/09/2013 20:37

Can you not go to your local family planning clinic? I had mine put in there, and though it didn't work for me hello ds1 they do take them out there too?

January seems an awful long time to wait - assuming you're not pregnant?

HenriettaPye · 23/09/2013 20:48

Yes apparently that's an 'urgent' referral from gp, due to the headaches I've been having. I was expecting to have to wait 2 or 3 weeks, not 5 months Sad

No unfortunately can't get it removed in family planning clinic as it's somehow gone missing inside me Sad
