Mirena coil

Hi

I have recently had the mirena coil fitted and now wander if I've made a huge mistake!!!!!!

I have always been on the pill and had no problems at all, regular cycles, bleeding etc but I am lazy taking it (forget regularly) so thought it get the coil as I'm 36 and not planning any more children.

However I have read lots of horror stories about it so seriously wish I'd not got it. In particular, I have a family history of thinning hair and mine is already very thin and I have recently read not only all the horror stories about hair loss but also that the mirena is bad for people like me who may have androgenic hair loss.

None of this was mentioned at the families planning who basically didnt offer any advice at all or give even general information.

It's only been about 10 days but I don't want it anymore!!, I'm worried about getting it out and what they may say. I asked for it but genuinely wasn't aware of all the issues with it so scared to ask them to take it out as I know its expensive etc?

Any advice please! Thanks

Hi, like KImbo50, I just wanted to reassure anyone thinking of having the Mirena Coil fitted. I had one fitted when I was 46 (7 years ago) after several years of almost continuous bleeding plus all the exhaustion and hormonal stuff that goes along with periods lasting 3.5 weeks every month. The GP had suggested the Mirena a number of times and I'd always said no. Once I'd agreed to do it - what a difference. The fitting was fine, not anyone's favourite activity but not painful or anything like some of the horror stories you read on the internet. I took paracetemol beforehand.
I can't tell you what a difference it made to my life, I have had no bleeding since (except spotting maybe once a year) and no hormonal swings; rages, exhaustion and worry - all completely gone. Obviously it's not for everyone but, if you are suffering as I did. I'd heartily recommend giving it a go. I wish that I'd done it years earlier and saved myself and my family years of living with a hormonal mess!
Its effects are staring wear off and, as I've not yet hit the menopause, I'm discussing with my doctor whether I can have a replacement fitted. Not sure if I'm too old but I hope not.

I have had a myrena coil for 2 months and I have to say that it has been the worst time of my life. Bleeding was the reason for having it inserted as I suffer from heavy periods. Bleeding wise it has been a miracle, none at all. BUT awful thoughts, even suicidal ones! Depression, anxiaty, nervoussness, panic attacks, every day, all day. I even went to A&E last week because of it. You can think I am mental, but the coil was driving me insane! Guess what? The doctor at the hospital told me that is very common to have these secondary effects!!! Please don't wait to have it removed if you feel low. Better to be weak or aneamic than Depressed! And last tip: the nurse didn't want to remove it asshe said it was not a good reason!!! Even if thedictor said so. At the end sherecognised me that it is because it costs NHS 300£. Excuse me dear nurse, my life is more valuable than that! And secondly I pay my taxes. Shame on this nurse! Amazing that she is a woman!
I will NEVER again be under a hormonal treatment.

Hi cloudscape, I'm 50 and my doc is happy to fit another if the endo symptoms return so hopefully you will be able to have another. So far so good for me, no adverse effects from the removal. Period die end of this month so that will be the one to watch. Good luck xx

Hi all,

I am after some advise as I had my Mirena Coil fitted a month ago and I've been experiencing some pain during sex.

I suffer from constipation too which is something I have suffered for over 10 years since I had a termination. The past 2 weeks the constipation has been quite bad and I do feel "full" in my lower abdominal area and bloated.

The pain during sex is mild, more described as uncomfortable, when I go on top. I presume this is because it's a deeper position. This has only come about since having the coil fitted.

My main concern though was yesterday when I had to stop sex because I suddenly had severe pain in my lower abdominal which I can only describe as being like early labour pains. The pain was so bad I nearly had a panic attack and ended up laying still scared to move for about an hour. The pain went but I felt tender for a while after.

I'm not sure if the pain was due to the coil or the constipation may be irritating my intestines and twisted during the moving of sex or something?

Any advice was be appreciated. Thank you.

I've had mine for 3 months now, and am very happy with it. No side effects, other than my period being lighter/longer/bit random. I am hoping it will disappear. However I am scared of trusting it completely, after having read a horror story on here about a woman that found out she was pregnant after 5 months, so I will be taking a test every month to make sure! (I can't have more kids due to my health, and my medications would mean serious issues for any baby being conceived whilst on them).

Back I'd probably try sex again, and if it happens again I'd go see the doctor to check if it's in the right place. Might have moved?

BackToBasics2 · 02/01/2017 16:51

I did think maybe it had moved. I'm not sure how to check but luckily I have my 6 week check up next week so they will be able to make sure it hasn't moved.

It's put me off sex for the minute tbh. :)

Can anyone give me advice as to the pain I'm receiving from my Mirena Coil fitted 3 days ago. I'm in terrible pain what feels like labour contractions. I'm worried it's coming out and maybe stuck in the cervix. I had the Coil for many years when my children where young and no problem now I am 46 and have very heavy periods the Mirena Coil was advised. I had my first fitted a month a go and it fell out, had a little pain then one day I thought "oh" what's that and it was my Coil. Went back 3 days ago and the Doctor thought it wasn't inserted high enough at only 6.5 and most likely still bent and straight and was able to come out. This time she said she was able to gain 8.5 and should have no problems yet I'm in pain and feels so sore, could it be coming out again? I don't remember my copper Coil giving me any pains. If anyone has experienced this or can put my mind at rest please do because I've searched Google all day and can't find any advise.

Hi ladies. I was lucky enough for my gp to send me privately yesterday for the Meriva coil implant fitting as I had not stopped bleeding heavily for 18 months and it was really getting me down. My gynaecologist told me it would possibly take 4 months for the bleeding to stop. 24 hours later. I am a new woman. No bleeding no pain and a new lease of life I hope you all have the same fantastic result I had I went under general anaesthetic. Had the camera inserted filled my womb with saline took a biopsy and inserted implant all in 60 mins. It really is worth it 😄😄😄😄😄🐟😄

Hi ladies, I was initially very pleased with mine. However, I developed bad abdominal pains a cervical polyp. The polyp was histopathalogocally analysed and it was deemed to be very inflamed. I am now on antibiotics. This is all due to trauma from the coil strings. I have had it removed.

Hi. Has anyone experienced continued bleeding after the 3m mark? I'm not sure if it's a period or still settling? TIA

I had the Mirena for eight years in all . I did find it rather uncomfortable for abut the first 6 weeks but after that a Godsend.Periods went from being really heavy and long (10 days) to having to use just one tampon per month. No weight gain, no mood swings.Removal and insertion are a little painful but over quickly.I am now in menopause so had it removed last year but would have no qualms in recommending it.

Hi, I had mine fitted recently and also have thin hair. My hair is thin as I am perimenopausal. However, I wasn't concerned. Many newish mums will have a coil fitted when they would shed hair post baby. I am sure there are cases linked to the coil that would have happened anyway. I plan to give mine 6 months and if not happy, take it out x

I relied heavily on online reviews before getting the Mirena IUD so wanted to share my own experience, although this is not something I would usually do! I had it inserted 5 weeks ago, and am 26 years old, no children. I had the Nexplanon implant a few years ago and had a terrible time with it, had it taken out after 9 months on off bleeding. The Mirena has been great for me so far...

The insertion of the Mirena is not a pleasant experience. I have had tattoos and think this was a worse pain, although it is a very different kind of pain to anything I have ever experienced! It does not take long (or at least it didn't for me) so at least the feeling is over within 10 minutes. I cannot explain it except for cramp and tugging that you can feel inside, it is just very uncomfortable and unfamiliar. After the appointment I thought I would be able to get on with my day but to be honest I recommend cancelling plans and keeping the day/evening free. In the end I just went home and lay on the sofa. I experienced a lot of cramp and dizziness from about 30 minutes after insertion but was fine the next day.

I felt more cramping for the next few days, but nothing an ibuprofen and hot water bottle couldn't help. I didn't spot or bleed at all for 3 weeks, and then had a pretty normal period. Maybe one or two days longer than usual but no heavier or more painful than I was used to.

So overall I would highly recommend it. For me so far it has been 100% worth the 10 minutes of pain to get it put in. It is so convenient not having to think about the pill or other contraceptives for 5 years! Maybe I am just lucky not experiencing any of the bleed through symptoms people talk about, but I think my experience is how it is for the majority of women and they sadly don't write about it!

So hopefully this will help some readers. x

I didn't want the Marina, as i dont like taking hormones (bad experience with the pill) so i had the copper coil for 8 years. It was the best thing in the world- totally natural. I had to ask my GP for it, who looked at me a bit weird- apparently everyone has Marina... but its natural as you can get, with no hormones. so my cycle was my cycle, and i never put on weight, or had any side effects,

Hi guys! I'm looking for some advice that I cannot seem to find any info on anywhere! I had the mirena coil fitted yesterday, had the cramping which I expected and thankfully the pain has gone today. However, I am experiencing a weird stabbing pain in my nether regions? It's like my inside is being pricked with little needles. I wondered if this could just be the threads settling as the nurse said they can be quite spikey for a couple of days? Has anybody else experienced this kind of pain after having the coil fitted or is something possibly wrong? Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks ladies 😊

Are there any women here who have had the Mirena fitted post menopause? If so what was your experience?
