Mirena coil

jamtoast12 · 19/05/2013 10:13

Hi

I have recently had the mirena coil fitted and now wander if I've made a huge mistake!!!!!!

I have always been on the pill and had no problems at all, regular cycles, bleeding etc but I am lazy taking it (forget regularly) so thought it get the coil as I'm 36 and not planning any more children.

However I have read lots of horror stories about it so seriously wish I'd not got it. In particular, I have a family history of thinning hair and mine is already very thin and I have recently read not only all the horror stories about hair loss but also that the mirena is bad for people like me who may have androgenic hair loss.

None of this was mentioned at the families planning who basically didnt offer any advice at all or give even general information.

It's only been about 10 days but I don't want it anymore!!, I'm worried about getting it out and what they may say. I asked for it but genuinely wasn't aware of all the issues with it so scared to ask them to take it out as I know its expensive etc?

Any advice please! Thanks

Hi guys, I'm a little worried about my marina coil. Its been in about 3 month roughly, the day I got it put in I was in severe pain (literally felt like I was in labour again) that lasted about 2 days. After that it settled down and I felt nothing after that. A few days ago I had an uncomfortable feeling in my stomach, turns out it was my period (which was very light, not even a bloody colour either!) lasted for a couple of days. Since I have got the coil in my partner has constantly complained he can feel the threads and says its painful and very uncomfortable.

Please help, I'm not sure whether what I am experiencing is normal or if this sort of stuff is common with the coil. Should I be considering getting it out? I've heard that your partner should NOT be able to feel the coil and that if they can its a bad sign.

Thanks in advance.

Chelsea89 · 27/04/2015 19:03

Kellyanne29 had the coil fitted about 2.5 weeks ago, the fitting its self was awful and like you said it was like being in labour again. The pain has dulled but not gone away, and I keep getting really sharp pains in my right side. Went to have it removed today and they can't find the threads? Consultant can't get me in for weeks and said if it gets worse to go A+E, but they didn't say if they would take it out there? Dose anyone think they will? I'm in agony!!!
Thanks ladies x

Kellyanne29 · 28/04/2015 08:14

Hi Chelsea I think if they are worried then yeah they may take it out there, perhaps if you were experiencing pain but if not then maybe they would just give you an appointment? They're more than likely to scan you in A&E than anything else! But yeah I hope it all goes smoothly for you.
I was really worried about mine, but yesterday my coil actually came out whilst I was in the bath!!!!! I couldn't believe it, neither could my partner (although he was relieved as he hated it) So yeah I'm like having a panic attack over here, know I defo need to ring the doctor asap, not going to get another put in though, wasn't right for me.

SarfEasticatedMumma · 10/05/2015 23:26

Evening all, hope you are all good? Am just joining in the Mirena thread as I had one fitted Mid March and it still feels a bit stabby in my uterus. I have no idea if I am still ovulating and if that is where the pain comes from, or if the plastic is sticking in me! (yuk)
I don't like not knowing what's going on really.... I know the coil stops your womb lining building up, but does your body try to have a period, but there's no blood to use IYSWIM - does anyone know?

Alarmed to see yours came out in the bath Kellyanne did it just pop out, or were you cramping badly? must have been weird!

Hi, I am having the coil put in, in a week to help with my Endometriosis and other problems. But my concern is I can not find any information saying whether is does help with it can anyone tell me if they have had this coil for the same reason and if it has helped? Thanks.

Melonfool · 29/05/2015 15:31

Hi

Not sure if this is a generic Mirena thread, but will add a question in case anyone can help.

I have my second Mirena, but it's now out of date by 8 months, so needs to be taken out/replaced. (We are using condoms)

I loathed having it put in and will not be doing that again unless I can have a proper anaesthetic. I know the NHS won't offer this (I tried last time and they were very dismissive). I don't have any children and they tell me I have a sensitive cervix - whatever, it is too painful for words.

I cannot take any sort of pill, injection or the implant - I am allergic to progesterone. Condoms are not a sensible solution for us longer term, they really put me off (though we're managing in the short term).

I've found the Mirena OK, though now it has 'run out' I am not getting the three-day debilitating migraines I used to, so that's been nice. But my skin has been bad since it ran out - can't flippin' win can you? (my periods never stopped when it was in date, so this aspect hasn't changed)

Dp isn't ready to have the snip, that's his choice, I won't push him on it.

So, my choices are - new Merina, copper coil, sterilisation.

Of those, it is fair to say, my preference is sterilisation but at 47 I doubt the NHS will do it and I reckon it would be quite costly privately. I'm also unsure what the side effects could be - pushing me into menopause maybe?

A Merina will probably see me through to menopause and the FPC said they'd leave it in two more years if at removal time I was showing signs of menopause.

A copper coil is 10 years so that would almost def see me through menopause anyway. I do worry about the heavier periods with that though.

But I won't be having this one taken out nor another put in without a proper anaesthetic. No way.

Does anyone know if it is possible to have the coil (either) put in privately and have an anaesthetic? I have 6 weeks off work soon so it would make sense for me to get this sorted out then if I can.

I went to the FPC but they were useless, didn't tell me anything I didn't know, said I had to see the GP and gave me a bag of condoms.

MollyMaDurga · 17/06/2015 14:09

I am 46 now and had my mirena put in at 41. How long have you had yours Melonfool? I am looking in to replacing it but as far as I can tell, it does not need replacing if it's been inserted after your 40th. It can last well up to 7 years and some say just leave it in till after menopause. That might change things for you?
I'll check a bit more, but after thinking i needed a new one i think I'm going to go with keeping this one until I'm well and truly past fertility.

cdwales · 25/06/2015 10:09

I'm on my third and so is my sister and SIL and we would not be without them! After 9 children between us we find the Mirena a godsend - no periods. One does tend to gain weight after having children - I have wondered whether this is nature's way of making sure the children have max nutrition. I am sure that I now need virtually no food to function but of course lots is made to feed the family so inevitably I eat quite a bit of it 9or used to!).

There is no reason why a low dose of progestogen should trigger hairloss...
No the worst thing is having them inserted/removed; but it is only once every five years and I just don't think about it! Yes they are expensive so the NHS does not exactly promote them.
As others have said stick with it for at least 4 or 5 months before deciding.
All the best!

Hi All,

So glad I found this thread after searching on the internet for help and understanding of how I'm feeling, I couldn't believe that all my symptoms are due to the Mirena Coil!! Was also a relief to find I'm not the only one who is struggling with this little piece of plastic, my doctor never explained these side effects to me, only told me it would help with my Endometriosis. My two main side effects have been hair loss, I used to have lovely long thick healthy hair but now its very thin and brittle (you can see my scalp so I wear clip in hair pieces), the other is weight gain and the urge to just eat and drink all the time. I also feel very down and have no get up and go. I've decided to have the coil removed, I'd rather put up with the heavy bleeding than spend my life feeling withdrawn. I'm hoping my hair will return to pre Mirena, has anyone else's??

smartin893 · 28/07/2015 11:49

After having my child I was deciding on which contraception to choose- I am aware of some of the awful side effects that many people go through, I risked it and got the mirena coil, my doctor let me know that its actually easier to be put in with those who have had children, and the procedure was no trouble at all! I was on the Yasmin pill before I had Emily and I have to admit I am suffering a lot less moodswings with the coil. I found some really helpful information about the benefits of the coil on: www.drmortons.co.uk/blog/mirena-coil-side-effects-insignificant-compared-to-the-benefits/

Miloarmadillo1 · 26/08/2015 17:06

Just had mine removed after 8 months of misery. More or less constant spotting plus random heavy bleeds, zero libido, very painful PIV sex if we did attempt it, low mood, anxiety and mood swings. Weight gain due to feeling premenstrual and craving food all the time rather than just a couple of days a month. The bleeding did settle a bit, I was told at 6 week check to give it 6 months, but not enough to make it acceptable long term, and the other symptoms were getting worse and worse. She (Merina) is well on the way to being cited in our divorce! I don't think the GP would attribute anything but the bleeding to the coil, but we will see what happens now it's out. It was apparently not sited correctly which may have contributed to bleeding and pain, but I will not be letting them replace it to test that theory!

Miloarmadillo1 · 09/09/2015 13:03

Just to update; Mirena removed 2 weeks ago and I feel loads better, less anxious, sunny tempered, less bloated and not craving sugar. good riddance, never again!

IAmNotDarling · 09/09/2015 13:16

I've been getting on well with mine - new period symptoms though!

Hard tender boobs for a day or two, a throbbing vein in my calf on those days and not a real period, just light discharge.

I'll be sticking with it. Smile

Mandaswaters · 26/10/2015 19:47

Hi. Can anyone tell me if they have experienced the same symptoms as myself. I had the merena coil a few weeks ago. I have been bleeding ever since which I have read they can be like this for a few months which is ok however I'm feeling sick a lot. Especially when I have eaten. I am struggling to eat all my meals and when I have eaten my stomach feels bloated and I feel sick for several hours

loraflora · 01/11/2015 11:53

I've had Mirena for over 3 years. I had it fitted due to heavy clotty periods during perimenopause rather than for contraception. I do get spotting and it was worse in the beginning. My main side effects were weight gain and decreased libido. My main concern at the moment is that I can't feel the damn strings if I check, and I've always been able to and this is coinciding with light bleeding. I think I'd better go get it checked out by the doctor. If it's fallen out I probably won't replace it at this stage as I must be a little closer to menopause but I hope it's not embedded somewhere it shouldn't be. Still I'm not in pain so that seems highly unlikely.

loraflora · 01/11/2015 11:55

No hair loss, by the way. If anything my rate of normal hair shedding has slowed, but I stopped dyeing hair over a year ago so I think that's the reason why.

Emma900 · 27/12/2015 19:52

I had my Mirena in for 3 years and had it out 4 weeks ago. I was ok for two weeks and it's been hell since. Has anyone heard of the Mirena Crash? I think I am experiencing it. Huge adrenaline surges, heart palpatations, sickness, diorrhea, basically a living hell. It feels like withdrawal. Docs are testing me for all sorts of things, thyroid, anaemia etc which are all coming back normal. They are now suggesting anxiety but I'm not stressed or anxious. Never have been. I'm convinced it's the removal of the coil. Any advice appreciated.

Hi, I'm new to this so sorry if doing this wrong.

I wanted to ask if anyone has experienced severe lower back pain with the mirena coil?

I am 46 years old, have x3 children, 16, 14 and 11. I hadmy third coil put in 6 months ago. Shortly after this I developed severe lower back pain. I have been to chiropractors, had physio, mri- the mri showednothing significant. I googled side effects of the mirena coul and was astonished at the side effects women have had.

In retrospect, in additioni To the back pain, I have also experienced side effects which I had blamed myself for- not connecting the coil.

I would be interested to hear others experiences.
Thanks

Hi all just signed up to this hoping someone can help me 😊 🙋 I'm 27 years old with my 3rd mirena coil in which I've had in nearly 2 years I've never had any problems with it and don't even have a period with it (bonus) but the last couple of days/1week I've been experiencing severe pain on the right side off my abdomen and its really painful, should I go see gp about this or is it just a normal thing? Thankyou for any help given 😊

Charlottekensal74 · 29/02/2016 15:00

I am just having my first period on the mirena coil - fitted 3.5 weeks ago. I feel incredibly vacant. Anyone experience the same thing?

Sambachick · 02/03/2016 01:02

Hi, I've had the coil fitted for 5 years and am due to have it removed in a couple of days. I have just been diagnosed with possible liver cancer. I just wondered if there was a connection, has anyone else received the same news

MonikaSieniuc · 03/04/2016 16:50

KImbo50 · 29/11/2016 10:10

Hi all, I'm new to this site and don't usually do this but I was reading with interest at the weekend and desperate for information so wanted to post my experience in the hope of helping others as you all did me. I'm 50 and had 2 more a coils over 10 years without a break. I had it to control extremely bad symptoms of endometriosis. I am clearly one of the very fortunate ones, I have had an extremely trouble free, symptom free experience, period free, pain free and enables me to get my life back on track. My second has been in place just over 10 years and the reason for me researching was because I didn't know what to do next, have it removed, have another, leave in longer as discussed earlier this year with my doctor. My biggest fear being the return of the debilitating symptoms of endo. In my heart I wanted to have it removed but that was holding me back. Anyway, I went to the docs this morning for further discussion. She reassured me that my womb being calm for so long and given my age I am unlikely to go back to the extreme endo symptoms and that if I do have problems we can discuss another more a or alternatives. My decision was made to have it removed which she has done this morning! The threads were hiding but she persevered and as was the case 5 years it was removed with minimal discomfort. I have dull ache in my lower abdomen but otherwise ok. I don't know what lies ahead for me, anything could happen having read some of the postings on here but I am very lucky in that I have faith in my GP and feel I have support should I need it. I wanted to share my experiences in the hope of helping others who are in the same situation as me. I'll post an update on a few weeks to tell those who are interested how things are. Thank you all for your postings and take care ladies. xx
