What would you do (coil related)

In need of advice please. I'm 47 years young and due to have my mirena coil removed in May this year as my 5 years is up. I've had one fitted every 5 years since my youngest was born 16 years ago and have had no issues apart from the fitting which was horrendous the last time. My womb is tilted apparently, hence the pain and discomfort.

I don't really know what to do, nurse advises having one one more fitted as I may be still fertile and I don't really fancy pill or condoms again. Would you just take a chance at my age and not bother as realistically how many women get preg at 47/48? At what age would you/did you stop using contraception? I suspect I'm heading towards menopause (very occasional hot flush) but as I haven't had a period since having Mirena I'm unsure as to how regular or not my periods would be.

The thought of enduring another fitting is horrific but then I don't relish the thought of another pregnancy. If it did by some miracle occur I would see it through and have the baby. My lovely hubby would, I'm sure, have the snip but we have 2 friends who had complications after their vasectomies so I'd rather him not. I've made an appointment to see my doctor to discuss but would be interested in peoples opinions. Thx

It's rare to conceive at that age, but not impossible (NHS says 2 years period free under age 50, and presumably you don't know what your natural cycle is like).

So it comes down to your attitude to risk, and also the impact on your family if you became pregnant again.

And what it might do to your peace of mind if you stopped using contraception at a time when you periods might be less regular. Would you be spending all your time wondering if you might be, and buying shelf-loads of kits as you'd never be quite sure when to test?

I hit this problem at 49, when I was taken off the pill for having migraines with aura (I wasn't getting them, but apparently it is too much of a risk for stroke to stay on it for one more year!)

I was offered a mirena for the next 7 years, and I have tried progesterone only pills but do not like the side effects and since they do cover up your periods, like mirena, I was not sure if I needed them or not.

I have only had one period in three months since abandoning the hormones.

I did read on a natural planning website that the chance of getting pregnant at 49 was one in 10,000 but not sure if that is overall, or using their method.
