Getting pregnant with copper coil in place?

Just curious as to whether many have fallen pregnant with the copper coil in place?

Am having the copper coil fitted next week and just wondered how common this is. I know it happens and realise that the answers here may be a bit biased (in the sense this is a parenting site and people will probably only post if they have fallen pregnant but I'm curious

I'm absolutely certain I don't want to get pregnant so was thinking of having the copper coil fitted and then also using condoms during my fertile period. Do you think that sounds ok or should I use condoms all the time?

I've had it for three years and so far so good. I had a dream that I was pregnant last night though, so feeling a bit paranoid today, hence checking out this thread. Also feeling reassured at the lack of replies!

I've had the copper coil for 3 years and no problems.

Mine was fine for 5 years (of a possible 10)

Had early scan (7 weeks) when the pregnancy symptoms and bfp were too obvious to ignore and copper coil was exactly where it should be, just with an 'unexpected blessing' in there too

My mum got pregnant with the coil in (I'm not 100% sure which) doctors put it down to the fact she fell one week. So I like to warn people about that :)

Ok so one in three so far hmmmm. Knew there would be some stories as I've read some before (on the Internet so it must be true right?)

I definitely definitely don't want to get pregnant so I think I'm going to use condoms during my fertile period too. What did they do about the coil sohhkb if you don't mind me asking? Take it out or leave it? Just curious

Hi Elvis - I had the coil taken out at about 10 weeks - this would have happened if I'd decided to continue with the pregnancy or not. I was told there was an increased risk of miscarriage but all is well and I wouldn't change him for the world

Fail rate is quoted in the 0.6 to 0.8 range. So for every 100 couples using it, there might be one pregnancy a year (or rather two pg every 3 years).

Yes sorry she fell off a chair one day, it moved or something and she got pregnant.

Dd was made with a copper coil fitted. Apparently it was slightly dislodged, but I couldn't tell! Has an early scan at 9 weeks and there she was. Had the coil removed by experienced doctor and all was well (with a whole load of medical students looking on as it didn't happen that often and 'was an interesting case to observe if you don't mind.' Being a nice person and all for the advancement of medical training, I agreed.

From NHS Chioces website:

"An IUD is 98?99% effective at preventing pregnancy. Newer models that contain more copper are the most effective (over 99% effective). This means that less than one in every 100 women who use the IUD will get pregnant in a year."

Not bad odds but it's still possible. It's possible with most forms of contraception though.

I had one, once it had settled I thought it was fine. I will have one again when I've had this baby.

I felt pregnant with the pill. Now I have a copper coil for nearly 6 years and so far so good. However I need to change it because mine was supposed to last 5 years only so I need to do it asap. After you have the coil fitted, it is possible your periods will be heavier than usual.

My brother was conceived with a copper coil fitted (thanks for that info, mum). But it would have been one of those older models ^ with higher failure rates.
