Chances of getting pregnant- withdrawl method

I originally posted this on the Conception thread but then thought perhaps this is a better location!

I'm not actively TTC but was wondering what the chances of getting pregnant using the withdrawl method are. I am really broody (already have 2dc's) but hubby is pretty adamant (at the moment) that he doesn't want any more children. I am just hoping that perhaps there's still a chance...(until I resort to trying to persuade OH)

I could never trap him by, for eg. going on the pill then 'forgetting' to take it or something though I must admit the thought it sooo tempting...but I'd always live with that betrayal

Guess I'll just have to hope for a happy accident! (I know that if I did accidentally get pregnant that he would welcome the baby 100% and be happy, I think he just worries about stretching things too far financially etc)

any advice/info greatly appreciate!

Don't have any advice as such but we are using that method since I can't use any other....so far its working! We definitely dont want any more for at least 6yrs x

Sorry to tell you we've used this method since we met (16yrs) and every pregnancy has been planned with a couple of morning after pills where we got carried away. So for us very effective.

Depends how controlled your DP is though I suppose!

We used it once and I conceived.

Perfect use is around 95% effective but typical use would make it nearer 75%.

Essentially, it relies on your partner being able to pull out in time every time. If he can do that, it's very reliable indeed. People spout a lot of myths about it but actually it can work if you can use it the way you should. The stuff about leaking semen in pre-ejaculatory fluid for example isn't true.

The one thing to remember as well if you're using it is that your partner should 'clear the pipes' so to speak between ejaculations. If you have sex twice in quick succession he should aim to have a wee inbetween!

If you really want a baby and are hoping for an accident, I think a frank discussion before deciding on contraception is needed. Because with withdrawal, it is really still a team effort to make it work. Don't make a longed for child into a compromised accident.
