Anyone become pregnant while using the copper coil?

Hi - I've been reading up on experiences here of the copper coil as I've been considering it, but notice a few posts about becoming pregnant while on it! I'm wondering how common this is (anecdotally), as the statistics show it as a very reliable method. Thanks!

A friend of mine who had the coil fitted became pregnant and had her baby this year.

The implant is more reliable than the coil. Have you considered this?

Eek! Thanks, Flosie. Was it the copper coil do you know? Hope that your friends' pregnancy went okay. I want a non-hormonal reliable contraception, ideally. But there doesn't seem to any real choice!

Watching this with interest. I'm after the same thing as I'm having the mirena coil taken out today and have no idea what to do next!

I know. When it comes down to it, there really isn't an even near-perfect contraceptive. Guess I may have to take my mother's advice to keep my tights on and legs crossed ;-) How was the Mirena, BlibBlibs?

I'm thinking sending DH for the snip might be a better solution Grin
I've had it for almost two years now and been dithering about having it out the the last year. No bleeding which is great, but for about two weeks of the month I'm just a moody miserable cow and just feel that if I could bleed I'd feel better.
Also hoping the stone in weight that I just can't shift and the hairy chin I'm cultivating might disappear too.

Will be watching this with interest. I have a mirena and am thinking of swapping it for a copper. I don't think these hormones agree with me.

Yes, I feel the same about the pill. Having been without synthetic hormones for four years after my DD was born, I noticed a difference in how I felt going back on the pill. I think I saw Mumsnet Carrie post that she got pregnant on the coil and that started to worry me! It would be hard enough finding out you were pregnant unexpectedly, without the added worry of having a coil along with it... The snip sounds like a good alternative if it's an option, BlibBlibs!

It does, but since I can't even get him to register with a GP I'm not holding out much hope!
Am going to ask today about the copper one while I'm there, it surely has to be safer than condoms?

I'm due to go next week. Can you let me know what they say re safety, please? Yes, condoms aren't v reliable in my experience either!

Yes it was the copper one and her pregnancy went fine, they just had to put their wedding back due to the surprise!

I think all contraception is rubbish tbh. I can't trust myself to remember the pill (that's how dd came along in the first place) condoms aren't great they spoil the moment, feel funny and sorry for too much information but one came off inside me 4 weeks ago which caused for a big rush to the chemist in the morning!

I've just had the implant fitted for the second time and I'm still experiencing a heavy period which has lasted 3 weeks so far! Sad Other than period problems the implant is pretty reliable unless it gets lost inside you which I also know has happened!

Not much choice really is there!

Well been to the doc's and its still in! She couldn't find the strings so have to make appt at the FP clinic and let them have a go!
She's not the chattyist of doc's but did say the copper coil is as reliable as the mirena but would more than likely cause heavy bleeding.
Can have it put in at the same time as this one is taken out so will have to have a think about that before next appt.

Sorry for the late reply, both. BlibBlibs, sounds as though getting it swapped at the same time as the other being removed is a good plan! Flosie, totally agree. We need scientists working on better, more reliable contraception! I guess I was worried more women would come forward and say they got pregnant while on the copper coil, but one case isn't too alarming, I guess! Good luck finding something that suits!

Hmmm....maybe we can invent a new kind of contraception....

hi Ladies, i haven't fallen pg with the copper coil. and i don't know anyone who has. i have to get it changed, but like blibblibs, the strings are lost so have to go to the hosp... so blibblibs, please let us know how it goes... am not looking forward to it, worried it'll HURT!

good luck all in making choices which are the best of a poor selection.
