Fitting of coil

Decided to have a copper coil-don't want to have anything "hormoney" as I'm bf and sex drive virtually non existent already!

I'm just a bit worried about the fitting of it. I've had 2 DC but delivered by CS as I failed induction and my cervix stayed closed.

Will this mean having the coil fitted will be painful?

It does hurt but it's over fairly quickly . I took co codomol that I had left over from c section and it was ok .

It hurts but nothing like contractions. Your cervix only has to open a tiny bit and the dr uses a narrow tube to fit the coil through so you should be fine. Take some decent painkillers and dont plan anything massively active for the rest of the day :) Im on my third one, by far the simplest contraception ive ever used

Tell them you want local anaesthetic when fitting-then you'll be fine (from personal, postpartum experience!)

I'm having the same dilemma - want one but scared of the horror stories about fitting it

When I had my copper coil fitted it was ok but when I had that taken out to have the mirena coil fitted it was absolute agony. I would just take some painkillers before hand just incase

Hmmm. Sorry to say, but for me, both times were horrendously excruciating! (i've had 2 fitted over the last 10 yrs, long story!) However, I had not had kids at that point...so my cervix was completely pin sized tiny.
on the plus side, you forget about it very quickly and it's great once it's in there and working!

Worth is once it's in, but excruciating at the time (I had epidural for labour, so maybe I am a wimp). Plus it took ages, the doc struggled to get it in, and I kept on pushing out the speculum without realising it. In the end, after several failed attempts, she had to put anasthetic gel on the area, and it was still very very uncomfortable.

Glad I had it done now. Doubt I would do it again without stronger painkillers (I was on cocodamol and ibuprofen, half an hour before fitting, but it did nothing for the pain).

Had mine a couple of months ago. Not memorably painful, pretty uncomfortable, but not horrendous. Had period pains for about the first month though, as well as bleeding. Settled down now though still get pains around ovulation. No regrets though.

I did feel very strange and woozy and naceaus strait after, cant describe and have never experienced this before nor after, maybe comapable to morning sickness. This did get better aftewr a few days.

It is the best contaceptive I have ever used.

I had the Mirena fitted about 2 months ago. It hurt more than a smear (but they don't hurt me, just uncomfy) but I had no cramping afterwards. I did bleed for a few hours afterwards, but was told to expect that. No regrets. I'm very glad I had it done and haven't had any side effects whatsoever.

I've had 2 fitted, and one removed, and each time have found it very painful (sorry, OP!), and felt similar to how dangerousliason felt. Very, very faint and woozy. Needed to spend the rest of the day in bed. My whole system just goes into shock when I have that done.

I had 3 vaginal births without painkillers as well. Personally, I'd rather give birth than have a coil removed or fitted, but I think it really is different for everyone, OP, and the only way to find out how you react is to go for it!

I'd suggest strong painkillers beforehand, and book a day in bed just in case!

I have to say my fitting was no worse than a smear test so everyone is different

I last had my mirena fitted (and removed) prior to TTC no 1, so I don't know how it'd be post-childbirth, but although it did hurt quite a lot it was over very quickly - and I loved it as a method of contraception, I had two and will be getting another after I have mini-bump.

Had it done today (paracetamol beforehand). Yes, it was awful as I have a"tiny, tiny cervix hole" according to dr BUT it was over in a very short time and now it's done. Feet up and lots of sympathy from DH!

Anyone thinking about a coil, I'd say do it!
