Bfing, irregular bleeding and cerazette

I am still breast feeding my 7 month old. Periods came back after 6 weeks and I had one every 2 weeks for a couple of months. They have settled now to 35ish day cycles but I have brown blood for a week before my period, which is then really heavy and painful and lasts another week.

I don't really want to use hormones because they do cross into breast milk but I'm fed up with the 2 weeks of bleeding every month!

My gp is useless, he gets embarrassed about gynae problems so muttered contraception at me at my 6 week check and prescribed cerazette, which I haven't taken yet. I know that one of the side effects is irregular bleeding so I don't know if it's worth trying it to sort out my periods.

If not, has anyone got any suggestions? I'll be trying for another baby by the end of the year so I don't think it's worth getting the coil. Are there any natural remedies which have worked for you?

cerazette stopped my periods for about 3 years, at which point I got the mirena coil

how about finding another GP or local family planning clinic you are comfortable with?

I have never been to a family planning clinic, I feel a bit too old to go there tbh (probably completely stupid!). Can they give medical advice though?

they have doctors and nurses there - I had my coil fitted at the family planning clinic and I am 38.

and a lot of GPs are always asking their family planning doctor colleagues for specialist advice on tricky cases!

Cerazette worked well for me while I was still bf but when I stopped bf I had the most almighty annoying bleed for about a month.

I'm now on Yasmin and really happy with it, but that's a combined pill so no good for bf, just mentioned it to give the complete story.

I was fine on Cerazette for several years, nice light regular periods but came off it in 2009 to try for our son, who eventually arrived in 2011! He's now 7 months old and I went back onto Cerazette 4 months ago and have been bleeding now for 8 weeks!!! Went to the docs and they said it can take a while to settle down but I'm getting really fed up of it now!! Just when I think it's going (brown stuff) it then comes back again!! I can't take a combined pill because of dangerous migraines and I had the coil once years ago and swore I'd never have it again!! I don't want the injection or implant as will be trying for baby two at the end of the year...any advice please????

Mitch269, there's only half a year to go, I personally would ditch the Cerazette and use condoms or family planning ovulation stick method until the end of the year if you want to try for DC2 so soon!

Hi guys - I wanted to put something on about cerazette that was actually POSITIVE ! I've now been on it for 6 months and it's been fab. Two periods 37 days apart then nothing now since 23rd March - no breast pain, no period pain, no back ache, no bleeding, no loss of libido, no 5lbs weight gain every 4 weeks - it's brill. I actually put off going on cerazette for 3 months as I read some really horrible reviews but so far so good. I'm diabetic, take meds for high bp and cholesterol and am over 40 so the "normal" pill was no longer an option for me - not much choice for us over 40s with a medical condition. Didn't want to risk implants as my niece got pregnant using one, condoms are awful and unreliable, the coil (YUK) etc ! My boobs are pretty pumped up all the time which is great for a B cup girl like myself but I'm not missing the flooding, chronic back pain and queasy headaches I used to get without the pill. I did get spots on my chin pretty much a new one every day for about 2 months on this but it settled down - was like being a teenager again ! I occasionally get low abdo pain in the ovary area or perhaps the odd twinge where I'd usually get period pain but no bleeding, no discharge, nothing ! Will post again in a few months but all good after nearly 6 months. Tracey x
