can't feel strings on Mirena after having it fitted, normal?

I had a Mirena fitted on Friday afternoon. It was fine, didn't hurt much, no cramping afterwards. But I had a feel around for the strings later on that day and couldn't feel anything. I struggle to reach my cervix (sorry for tmi) so wonder if that's the problem, or if the doctor just trimmed them deliberately short? After fitting it, he did say 'right, I'll trim the tails now' so maybe I'm not supposed to feel them? It would just make me feel a bit better if I could feel them and knew that it was there. (it must be, I checked for tails after he'd fitted it and before I'd been to the loo so can't have fallen out)
I think I might wait for my 4 week check before having sex without a condom, just to be safe
(am paranoid because I fall pregnant VERY easily, have fallen on the Pill)
Any advice?

Definitely get checked - my non mirena got 'lost'

If you have a feel for your cervix, with the indentation in the middle, like a soft polo mint with a hole in it (sort of) The strings should be coming out of there.

The first few weeks are the most likely for them falling out/being expelled. If you can't feel it at all, I would use other contraception until your check up.

My strings disappeared a few weeks after insertion - I had a scan and the Mirena was still in but it was a bit scary at first (the idea of an extra pregnancy was scary, not the scan). All was fine, but mine is due to be changed now and not looking forward to them trying to fish it out.

nope, I don't think I've ever felt my cervix tbh, I think I'm feeling around in the wrong place lol (sorry again for timi!).. I'll have another go; I must have a long birth canal!

I can't feel mine either. I've had it for a couple of years now and it must be still in there working as I don't have periods any more.
However, mine's not for contraception, as DH has had the snip. Mine's to stop my awful heavy periods- which it has.

The strings can disappear up around the back of the vagina too - the cervix sticks out a bit then there's like a space all around it where the strings can get tucked up sometimes. No such thing as TMI Smile but then I am an HCP so I can talk crevices and poo all day Grin

peanutbutter38 · 30/04/2012 09:55

what's a HCP?

I can't reach to feel mine. Poor dh has to do it Blush

peanutbutter38 · 30/04/2012 10:11

what do the strings feel like? Are they soft like dental floss, or harder?

OP posts:
peanutbutter38 · 30/04/2012 10:12

might ask dh to have a 'look around' rofl!

Harder than dental floss, but like strong fishing line I suppose, in between a thread and a soft bendy wire.

If you squat down you might find it easier to each the threads.
