Depo can stop periods. In my case, I bled all the time. I also put on tons of weight that I still haven't shifted. Wouldn't recommend it at all.

Thanks seona, I'm breathing sigh of relief
I'll try to watch the weight gain, but I'm really hungry!
Got next jab in April so I'll see how I go

Have to say nurse didn't mention any side effects, just that it was same as pill but without hassle of takin it to workHmm

I bled almost continuously for the 12 week duration of the first injection. After that, not another period until about 5 months after I stopped it. I also put on loads of weight and lost my sex drive altogether for most of the time I was on it...which is a known side effect of it. So much so that is used as a type of chemical castration for sex offenders in America.

I couldn't recommend it either.

Seona1973 · 14/02/2012 19:04

there are plenty of side effects e.g. delay in return of fertility, increased risk of osteoporosis, etc

I'd advise you to think twice about having another shot of this.

Huge weight gain, depression, lack of sex drive, horrendous mood swings, insomnia and worst of all infertility. Not nice Sad

Wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy.

hermionestranger · 14/02/2012 19:10

Same thing. Massive weight gain, depression, total loss of libido as in zilch, nada, zip, nothing, mood swings, etc. best thing I ever did coming off it. I had no periods at all for the four years I was on it.

hermionestranger · 14/02/2012 19:11

No one mentioned any side effects to me either btw.

jelliebelly · 14/02/2012 19:13

Similar story here - no periods but horrendous mood swings and weight gain as well as acne like spotsSad would never take it again

oneofsuesylvesterscheerios · 14/02/2012 19:14

I had terrible side effects - the hormones made my body behave like I was pregnant the whole time: sickness, sore boobs, mood swings, etc. I took it for a year and it took me another whole year to get a period again. Not recommended.

hermionestranger · 15/02/2012 00:19

Took me six months for a period to come back and they were erratic.

letthembe · 15/02/2012 00:55

I have a positive story. Absolutely no weight gain, if anything I've lost a couple of pounds. Greater sex drive, (using condoms before) - think it is freedom/greater security in knowing I'm covered etc.
No period for 10 weeks or so weeks, then a couple of weeks of very light period. No breast pain (that was terrible before using the depo injections), no mood swings and definitely no nausea.
So obviously recommend it.

Emmielu · 06/04/2012 14:36

Letthembe - positive story here too. Depo saves my life basically. Its the only contraceptive that works with my epilepsy pills to stop seizures. I produce too much of one hormone & depo stops that hormone producing. Little weight gain but I needed it, I love my boobs & bum (weight has nicely given me lovely curves) it's helped with my skin too, no sickness, spotting to start with, sex drive through the roof. I'd never turn back.
