The contraceptive injection

Can any one tell me what this involves and what exactly the injection does to prevent conception?
It actually my 20 yr old DD who is thinking about getting the injection. All we know is, it lasts about 12 weeks ?

i had it for a year, its an injection in the top of the bum cheek, you get it every 12 weeks (and after the first you cannot go before 10 weeks after to get it again). mine was called Depo-Provera. if you google it you will get all the information you need. they do tell you that it shouldnt be used long time because one of the side affects is brittle bones. when you stop using it, it can take some time to get regular periods again - my last one was over eighteen months ago and my periods are just starting to regulate themselves!!!
