Any positive Mirena coil experiences?

I have just has DS3, and have arranged to have a mirena coil fitted in 2 weeks time. I have never used anything other than condoms/combined pill as contraception, but as I am now over 30 and have been on the pill for more than 10 years, various GP's have recommended the Mirena as a safer option than going back on the pill.

But all the stories on MN re Mirena seem to be about all the negative experiences people have had Shock so I was wondering whether anyone has had a positive experience?!

Only one of my friends in RL has got a mirena and she loves it, saying it's the best decision she ever took.

Thoughts anyone? Am I mad to give it a whirl?

I agree with your RL friend! I'm on my second in 9 years and nearly on my third. Not had a period in all that time - whats not to like? Xmas Grin

I don't know it's there.....

I loved it. Used it for 3 years between ds and dd1 and for 7/8 years between dd1 and dd2. No periods while it was in but no difficulties conceiving once it was out. Had a mis before conceiving dd2 which is why it was a 9 year age gap. Haven't gone for it again as might ttc no 4 in the next year but after that I'll be going for a mirena again.

I love it too, had mine fitted in March and have not had a bleed or a cramp since. I was advised to take ibuprofen prior to fitting but thought I would tough it out. Was a big mistake for me - extremely painful cramps during fitting, GP said I have an unusually short and sensitive uterus! They got some ibuprofen down me and I was right as rain. I would highly recommend Mirena, but might be worth pilling it up a bit before fitting Smile

I am a happy Mirena customer. I still have periods, but not very heavy at all. Haven't noticed any side effects in terms of mood etc... I don't have to think about it at all, and having used condoms for ages it is much, much nicer.

Great - thanks for your messages. I think I will keep the appointment and try it.

I am having the fitting on New Years Eve, and have a party that night... you can mix nurofen and champagne can't you?!

oh I am having mine fitted today - I am really scared

I have one. Very mild spotting and cramps for the first month, then nothing. I'd heartily recommend it! (And having it put in was only momentarily uncomfortable)

Good. Not a good fitting as I am ultra sensitive but am unusual in that respect. Havent had a period in five years and ws flooding monthly prior to this.

Just had it replaced. :) my chest has expanded too!!

I had the mirena fitted in Apr10 2 months after birth of DD #2. I had no side effects and found it great. My periods were regular but amounted to very little bleed over only a couple of days. I have had PND in the past with DD#1 and been on prozac/sertraline. The mirena didn't make me depressed or affect my moods at all and I think I'd have noticed.

I had it removed in Nov10 so we can try for #3 and the opposite is true! My cycle is up the creek...28days, 25days, and now 35 days! My last 2 periods have been awful, lots of blood loss...similar to after child birth....super tampons flooded in 2/3hrs - even at night! It only lasts 2/3 days but feels like forever.

Re the weight issue - I didn't put on any weight and my weight remained static all last year but this past 6 weeks I have definitely lost weight, down a dress size (14 to 12)....then again I am being more careful about what/how much I eat. Until I read up online about my ridiculous periods post removal I had never heard of the link to weight with the mirena.

If we're lucky enough to have another then I wouldn't hesitate in having the mirena fitted again.....the heavy periods won;t be an issue as #3 is definitely the last!

i am having it done privatly as the nhs waiting list in our area is 7 weeks long

and to be honest i just cant stick out two more periods need it done now so next week i have a conslutation then the week after they will fit it Smile

i suffer with Dysmenorrhoea and some endmetrosis and i just cant stand it my periods make me vomit, have the squirts and leave me in really terrible pain i suffer with migraines to and my periods are often a trigger for these which is very very bad

i have been told that the coil will helped thank you so much ladies i feel much better reading this postive thread than the other one

EthelredOnAGoodDay · 11/03/2011 15:00

Another positive experience here. I had mine in for 4 years and didn't have any probs at all. Had it taken out in the November and DD was concieved 3 months later. All good as far as i am concerned.

KentMum2008 · 28/03/2011 13:04

I'm another Mirena lover. I'll admit to some side effects (mainly acne) but a bit of acne is far easier to deal with than disabling menorraghia and dysmenorrhoea. I get a really got lotion called Zineryt from the GP which pretty much clears my skin right up. I was just saying to another poster that you need to weigh up the pro's and con's for you personally. Write a list and see which side is longer!

Lotsofkids1 · 28/03/2011 17:48

Hi, I have had the Mirena coil for over 4 years straight after the birth of my last son. It is fantastic. No Periods at all. No side affects at all. I still get some stomach cramps but one for a day or so once a month. I have had a bit of acne but nothing that a normal period wouldn't cause. I am about to have ot removed so we can try for baby number 4 but will have it straight back in after. Hope this helps. I was very worried about it but would highly recommend it now.
