lamda exams...................

currently rearranging finances asDD (8) going to indie school next year. She was going to stagecoach and had done grade 1 spoken english.Due to stop this from next term. Has anyone done these exams privately. Any experience welcome...Would like her to do public speaking at advanced level if she continues this.

I'm not quite sure what your question is.

I enter my dd and other students for these exams thorugh Stagecoach. A teacher is hired to provide one to one tuition and we go to a public centre.

Dd's (indie) school also offers similar exams but with a different exam board. The tuition is more expensive though and it is in a group.

Are you sure it is LAMDA and not another board she has done as you can't do Grade 1 until you are 9 years old?

dd has so far done the Preliminary speech exam (she is 7 so that is the highest grade she can take. Next year she will do Entru Level when she is age and will choose from wither Speaking of Verse & Prose or Acting.

The syllabis changes in September so I need to look through it to see wht the changes are.

Dd finds it worthwhile, she enjoys them.

DD has completed her firstt lamda exam recently (at private school)

The lessons for year 7 were a small group and cost about £7 for half an hour.

From sep the school is only offering 1 on 1 lessons for half an hour at the cost of £13.

DD is not going to continue ... its all getting a bit £££.

Debating society in school is free though ....

I thought it was grade 1 but just checked their website- so maybe she has done an entry level exam then.She has done it through stagecoach and I had to pay xtra for the coaching for this exam.So my question was is it possible to hire the tutor privately and let her carry on doing the exams.Her indie school that she is going to go to does not actually offer sppech and drama lessons.Although we would have liked to continue sc we are cutting back on certain things from september.So if I get some help from someone who does this coaching this will keep the exam side of things going whereas the new school offers some sort of drama incorporated into their english lesson and the school does two production a year DD will have the oppurtunity to continue doing some drama as well. Sorry long post - hope I make sense.

Yes, if you can find a private teacher who can prepare her for the exams you can enter at a public centre. You may have to travel, our nearest centre is about 20 miles away.

We pay about £12 for a 1:1 30 minute lesson. Dd's school charges about £7 for a group lesson, however 1:1 we find that dd only needs about 6-7 sessions to prepare for the exam. The group lessons run through the whole year with the exam at the end.

oh thats good to know as she was very keen regarding her last exams.islandofsodor- may I ask you whether the stagecoach will give the information regarding the person who coached my DD or is it wise to get someone else- if so what sort of qualfications do you look for? thanks for your advice.

I'm not sure. The LAMDA tutor will have been employed directly by Stagecoach, Stagecoach will have provided the venue, insurance and done all the admin associated with exam entry as well as advertised for, found and interviewed them. If the tutor lives a distance away (as ours does) it would be worth their while travelling for 3 hours of teaching but not for one student. We often use another of our teachers who is there anyway for a later class or whatever.

If the tutor has his or her own private practice however they may be willing to take on another student that way.

Yo need to look for some kind of professional training (degree or diploma from either a university, drama school or an exteral exam board such as LAMDA, Trinity Guildhall (ATCL etc), plus experience of teaching. To be honest I find that it is only in an interview that I can suss out whether someone is suitable or not. YOu need to find out whether they are CRB checked and whether they hold insurance. Its similar to finding an instrumental teacher really.
