Sorry that should be WSS, DS is nearly 16.
He also said there are a lot of DC on degree courses, which makes the whole thing more competitive but it is also a reflection of how much people value it in terms of professional experience.

HanD31 · 23/01/2026 11:34

My DC is 18 and auditioning at the moment but she may take a year out!

Mari2026 · 23/01/2026 11:36

My DC is 13 and their audition day skewed much older than I had expected.

Our callbacks are for The Ragged Child and Just So. If they get selected for The Ragged Child which is all done and dusted at the start of July, does that mean that there might also be an opportunity to be cast in one of the new musicals which is only happening in the summer holidays? Not sure if there is ever an opportunity to be cast in more than one project in a year.

Good luck to her with her auditions xx

Kittykat57 · 23/01/2026 12:06

My DC is 14 and has been recalled for Everyday. They are delighted as they workshopped it last year and was blown away by the concept. Commiserations to those with disappointing news, it's so hard for them isn't it. My DC thought the audition process felt tougher this year as they were put in the older age group and it felt like there was a big range in age!

Authenticallyme1010 · 23/01/2026 12:31

Brilliant news for many - great to hear and sending lots of virtual hugs and biscuits for those not successful this time. I agree - auditions tougher and a lot more older ones on my DS’s audition. My DS is 16 and was part of Carousel last year, so very thankful to get through to the next stage again this year. He’s been recalled for Just So and Everyday.

Congrats to your DC. Did they audition in London? I think the London days can have more of the older auditionees, because of the proximity of lots of drama schools, but the team are always conscious of people's age and would still take into account their relative levels of experience and training.
To answer your question, it's pretty unlikely that anyone would be offered Ragged Child AND a summer show. It would be very expensive for a start, but also they wpukd want to be able to offer as many places as possible. The only exception I can recall was on an occasion where somebody in a lead role unfortunately had to drop out of a summer show between Easter residential and summer, because they got a TV job, and a boy from the July show was parachuted into the summer show as a replacement, but only because he had been a very close second choice for the role and there hadn't been anyone else who had come close to his degree of suitability.

MxPickles · 23/01/2026 12:42

Hey all, Congratualtions to those with good news and sorry for the ones who didn't have the results they had hoped for this time.

As the parent of an under 16 I would say it is a MASSIVE thing for U16's still at schoool to even take part in NYMT audition and be given parity with students in full time vocational training. Seriously the workshop audition itself is an amazing experience which can only help with growth.

To those with DC under 16 who have been been recalled for specific shows I have to be cheeky and ask what song did they audition with from the set list and what have they been recalled for. (DM if that feels more comfortable than sharing here) I am wondering if there is a correlation between song choice and show considered for.

For example DD (14) is looking at doing What it Means to be a Friend which I think lends well to Everyday but something like Spark of Creation may be better for Ragged Child/ Just So. Any insights you have would be super helpful in helping us make a decision as to what way to lean ... or if I am just overthinking!

Thanks so much. I was meaning the new musical development workshops happening during the summer holidays rather than a show but perhaps the same still stands that it would be unlikely to be involved in both things.

Biscuits has way more exprience than me so their answer comes from years of involvement. However from my observation in our first season last year I woudl say it is possible if they have numbers drop out late in the season that you might be offered an additional and/or alternative workshop.

There was some movement between projects last year, although this is more likely to happen If you have a specific skill or attribute that is necessary for casting and not many people have it!

Well done on your DD for both recalls that is a great result, and sort of has confirmed my gut feeling that they would e looking to make spaces for u16's on Just So (we already knew Ragged Child has lots of roles for this age)

Can I ask what audition song she picked please? We are still going back and forth on making a decision so any insight is super helpful :)

No - he’s an actor really (albeit adv 2 dance across the board, not a singer). He’s also in the midst of acting college applications and A levels but really wanted to try for NYMT after stage managing carousel last year and learning all the dances 🥰)

Sorry to hear that, especially given your DS learned all the Carousel dances last year and clearly loves to perform. As you say he isn't really a singer I suspect he could still have done very well everywhere else, but unfortunately the singing is really important. As your DS wants to be an actor he might like to consider an assistant director role in a year or two, via the creative mentoring pathway. Another way to be part of a show, but where skills as an actor would be really valuable.

Oh sorry, I misunderstood. I think anyone recalled for shows and not cast will automatically be considered for a new musical workshop. If they are cast in Ragged Child they wouldn't normally be considered for a workshop too, but you could always drop a line to the team expressing interest, and then if they end up with vacancies if people pull out or decline, they will know your DC is keen.

Thank you. I’m sure he’ll get involved again in some capacity in the future and stick to NYT for now 😁

my youngest is still wavering on whether to get a last minute audition slot (he workshopped Every Day last year) - these darn GCSEs 😂

I don't think knowing my DS choices would help you as he had a different list, just wanted to high five the over thinking! Totally get it. 😆

Yes this is what happened with my DD last year. She recalled for Lightning Boy and was offered Flip NMW!

Oh just do it! He'll be really sad if he doesn't try. It's only 6 days or so at Easter and I think if they get a really fun break at residential they come back more willing and motivated to revise! (Just my opinion of course, but there was no way my DS would have spent the entire Easter holiday revising even if I had said he couldn't do NYMT!).

Montimom · 23/01/2026 22:01

Well done to all who have been recalled and hugs to those who were not!! When you think of the numbers auditioning it really is a huge achievement to get recalled!! Great to see so many auditioning this year!

ThatCoralBee · 27/01/2026 18:47

My dd aged 13 has just been offered bymt for Easter. First time doing all this. Anyone done the Easter one before? It seems like will require some days before our term ends off school. There will be quite a lot of travel involved for us and she’s never been away for more than a few days. Would welcome some experiences!

Kittykat57 · 27/01/2026 20:26

I have been trying to find an active thread about NYT but have been unsuccessful. I have seen experienced NYMT mums comment about NYT from time to time. Is there anyone on here who wouldn't mind answering some questions if I DM you please? Thank you

yodaforpresident · 27/01/2026 23:54

I think any NYT questions usually end up on this thread. I would not say that I am hugely experienced but my DD joined NYT last year and did the intake training - I will try and answer any questions that I can!

Congratulatione to your DD! We used to have some BYMT parents on this thread but they haven't been about so much recently. I hope they turn up and give you good info, but as far as I know the young people who take part have a wonderful experience. There are also some parents whose young people have done both as a stage performer. @Mcmumager can you help?

Mine did NYT, but that was several years ago now and I know the system has changed a lot since then, so I don't know how helpful I could be. He enjoyed it a lot and found it a useful experience ahead of auditions for drama school.

Hi there- congratulations to your daughter. My ds did 2 shows with BYMT however neither were at Easter so didn’t have to have time off. A friends daughter did the Easter course but it worked with her holidays. I would imagine the school could use an educated elsewhere type of code to permit the leave- I know our school did that when my kids did panto and I’m use BYMT will support with a letter for the school if needed.

My ds was 15 the first time he did it back in 2021. He was away for 3 full weeks with no contact as it was Covid times so they were in a cast bubble. Even when we watched the show we could only wave after as they were keeping them all safe. With everything that happened during Covid he’d lost a bit of love for MT- I think the zoom dancing in the kitchen killed him. I’d say those 3 weeks with BYMT totally made him fall in love with it all over again- he had the time of his life, made friends he’s still got now, was so well looked after and so well fed! He did BYMT the year after , has done 3 years at NYMT and is now at drama school. I hope she has a great time.
