After school dance lessons cancelled

Hi all, hope someone can shed light on what my next steps should be!

in October last year I signed up my daughter to start dance lessons after school. We received an email from the school and were told if we would like to sign up to do so following a link to pay the dance teacher directly.

the first day came and the children were all very excited but last miniute (an hour before the school was meant to finish) we parents receive a message saying the teacher has had car trouble and won’t be able to attend. She did send the parents an email stating she would reschedule any missed lessons at a later date. We didn’t think anything of this at the time but fast forward to December and she ended up cancelling 5 lessons out of 9. The school decided not to renew the dance teachers contract and didn’t want her back in January. I contacted the dance teacher via text message and she replied that she would only return back to work on January 13th and that I should send an email and she would get back to me that way. I did this but she hasn’t returned my emails and now the emails are bouncing back- not sure if she’s deleted the email address now. She’s also not replying to my text messages or answering the phone. The school say that they can’t do anything and that I just have to contact the dance teacher for a refund.

im at a loss and don’t know what else I can do. I feel let down by both the school and dance teacher. It may not be a lot of money for some parents but we actually do struggle with trying to provide these activities for our children and really can’t afford to just lose money like this.

is there anything that I have missed or should be doing. Would really appreciate the advice

If you paid by a card you may wish to contact your bank to see if a charge back is possible under breach of contract.

If they take it up they may get the money back for you.

You may also wish to ask school what checks were done to ensure the dance teacher was reputable, insured and licenced if required and look at their hiring policy. School may consider writing a letter to the teacher on behalf of the parents owed money.

You need to ask the school for the dance teacher's contact details and then send her a letter before claim. If the school refuse to give them to you then you can the letter to them to forward. Show them you mean business.

Does the dance teacher run their own separate dance school?

I spoke to my bank today but because my daughter did have some lessons they can’t provide partial refunds so have told me to report to police and trading standards 🤷‍♀️

Dance teacher sounds flaky. Avoid.

Dance teacher sounds flaky. Avoid.

😂 I think that’s obvious. OP is looking for a refund on lessons she’s paid for, not advice on whether the dance teacher is worth continuing with.
