Starting off a new thread for 2025 now that both organisations have opened applications for next season!

OP posts:

I parked yesterday on Roman road first right past arts Ed it was max 4 hours (so I had to move it half way through) it. Cost £10.00 for the 4 hours

Lionelblair · 18/02/2025 11:15

good luck to DC auditioning today. And then bring on the decisions! Loving the distribution of biscuits, just wondering at what point do we convert to vino? 😆

MxPickles · 18/02/2025 11:23

Comefromaway · 17/02/2025 14:44

No, a professional credit on your performing CV for those wanting to go into the industry. Amateur or school shows can't be used although drama school/conservatoire shows can.

Oh I see! Thanks for explaining. So... for those on spotlight, should BYMT and NYMT shows be listed or just Workshops?

Comefromaway · 18/02/2025 11:47

Shows & new show development workshops (but not skills workshops) .

Depending on your age and other training untertaken skills workshops may be appropriate for an early career young person to list under training.

I'm currently on antibiotics. Otherwise the vino would have been flowing, and I don't even have a DC auditioning. But as waiting room Granny, I hereby give you all permission to crack open something to help with the nerves...

Anyone got todays' half-time scores? I've not spoken with mine yet !

BexieL · 18/02/2025 15:16

Hey 👋🏼
just found this super useful thread and wanted to jump on and say hello!

MY DD aged 11, auditioned for BYMT for the first time and we are absolutely thrilled to say she got selected. Anyone else’s children taking part in The Glamification of Loki? DD is so excited and also a tad nervous about being away for over 2 weeks!

allhailthebrain · 18/02/2025 16:58

Congratulations @BexieL to your DD! There have been a couple of others with BYMT offers so far I think! I look forward to hearing more about it 😊

Truetoself · 18/02/2025 17:19

@Advent0range what is NYWO?

Biscuitsneeded · 18/02/2025 18:27

Truetoself · 18/02/2025 17:19

@Advent0range what is NYWO?

I'm guessing National Youth Wind Orchestra, or something along those lines?

Lionelblair · 18/02/2025 19:16

Hi @BexieL my DS has been offered a show for BYMT but not the same one as your DD. He’s had a great time with BYMT for two summers. This year we are waiting for results from the nymt recalls before deciding what he’ll do. I hope your DD enjoys it. Well done.

Lionelblair · 18/02/2025 19:38

Sorry, just realised your DD is 11! Great achievement. The pastoral team are so caring and supportive- I’m sure she’ll be fine even if a bit nervous.

Advent0range · 18/02/2025 20:15

@Biscuitsneeded @Truetoself apologies, yes National Youth Wind Orchestra.

Congratulations to your DD - that's amazing news..!

Our daughter auditioned last year for BYMT for the first time and was cast in a show. She wasn't the youngest (turned 14 on the first day). There were others who were also 11 (including a girl from Ireland whose mum was on the 2024 BYMT mumsnet thread - which is where we found out all our info..!).

While I (dad) was fine with two weeks away, her mum/my partner was more cautious and actually stayed nearby for two weeks - she could work at a friendly partner organisation.

That said, once they are in BYMT it's full on for them - long days and hard work. They are extremely well looked after and the pastoral team were brilliant at allaying any concerns. The performers ate and slept well in between rehearsals.

There are two days off: the first is at the end of the first week and is an opportunity for you to visit and take them out for the day (strict curfew to return). We did that and used it as a birthday celebration. The second day off they all stay in camp and use it to chill or do some individual rehearsals.

My tips would be:

  • Send enough clothes for two weeks (or do a swap if you see her on the day off). There's no time for laundry.
  • Same for personal items (washing, personal hygiene, etc.)
  • Send in extra snacks. The food where they were last year was good - university halls, but it's nice to have extra of the things you like.
  • Portable games like Avocado Smash might be handy, though it sounds like they don't have stacks of free time
  • Ahead of time - July I think - you will be sent a request to do a self tape of singing and acting, which your DD will need to record and return (we were WFH and had to help her do so many takes of a song!)
  • The cast do an online meet and greet with each other, the BYMT and creative team. Possibly two of these I think. I think that was also in July (she was in German on a school trip and had to dial in from a youth hostel!) That was a useful intro and from that they swapped numbers - lots of them stay in touch now via Snap/Insta.
  • Be prepared not to get any of the big parts - everyone will do something, and not everyone can do the big roles. Our daughter was a bit miffed at first but soon knuckled down into the role she had, which she thoroughly enjoyed - the perils of competitive children!

Our daughter is lucky enough to be back again this year (in a different show - though she does know one other girl from the show they did last year). She's really looking forward to it and we're more confident about the whole process.

Your DD will love it and want to do it forever..!

PS someone will mention Let It Snow - this is a Christmas concert where all the shows and camps come together to perform medleys to each other. Not compulsory but we went along - it was in Shoreditch Town Hall last year - and we thought it was awesome as we had a brief insight into the other shows and camps. Recommended.

HanD31 · 19/02/2025 06:22

My DD loved her audition workshop. What a great place to have them hosted in. Now the wait. Luckily I am ridiculously busy with work, a theatre trip and Dd in a workshop with a performance at the end so no time for wine, biscuits (sleep or breaks 🤨)… roll on Friday. I am sending biscuits to you!

seventwelve25 · 19/02/2025 06:22

Sorry I've not chipped in to this thread too much, but I have been finding it so helpful! Thanks for the helpful tips about residential above (I'm assuming NYMT would be much the same) - a laundry swap seems like a good call!
My dd had a wonderful time on Sunday at LB recall and has been dancing the dance ever since! Just to echo what others have said, I think she was blown away by the friendliness of everyone and didn't want to leave and this actually made me feel way more at ease about her potentially being away from home for so long.
Now the 4 days are over and the wait begins...I imagine there are some hard decisions to be made...
Best of Luck to everyone for good news on Friday! xx

ZooKeeper123 · 19/02/2025 10:14

Is it Friday yet 😅

Wow… thank you so much for all this info! Really appreciate all of this. I will be able to tell my DD a bit more about it now. She likes to feel prepared and have a rough idea of what will happen so this is great.

Having the day off will be perfect for handing over some clean clothes, more snacks etc. My husband and I were thinking of staying close by the night before for her day off so that we can see her. She may well not want to see us if she is fully absorbed in the experience and made new friends…. Who wants their embarrassing parents hanging around 😂.

She is so excited!! Thanks again for all of that info 😊

I am totally with you @ZooKeeper123 drumming my fingers here…trying to visualise how quick decisions about a cast list of 150 plus new musicals can take…only a couple of hours, surely…😂 day one, an optimistic two to go…thanking @Biscuitsneeded for permission to pop corks!

Biscuitsneeded · 19/02/2025 18:38

Oh goodness, wine, gin, biscuits, chocolate - have it all!
