Starting off a new thread for 2025 now that both organisations have opened applications for next season!

Fab day had today by my dd. She was blown away by the talent of everyone in the room ⭐️ Good luck to everyone going tomorrow and Tuesday- then roll on Friday when hopefully we all get answers 😀

I love this type of post, when someone who is new (I think?) to NYMT goes and has a brilliant day. And I think it proves why recalling so many kids probably isn't just a cynical ploy to get them all to go on skills courses, as was suggested upthread. I think they recall lots because they meet so many genuinely talented young people and they want to give as many as possible, firstly, the chance to be considered for a show, and secondly the experience of the recall itself. It's another workshop, or even 2, at no further cost to the young person (except of course for the cost of travel which I accept may be substantial!) with talented creatives and other young people from whom they can learn and with whom they can make friends. If NYMT just wanted the money they could do a much shorter first audition and not bother with the recalls at all - my strong feeling is they do them because they want the very best (as in most suitable) cast for each show. And the care they take shows in the end result, as the shows are of such a high standard. It is undeniably hard on talented kids to be recalled and go to London and then not get a show, but I think the motives are entirely genuine. And hopefully if DC have really enjoyed the audition process, if they don't get cast this year they will want to come and try again another year when they may match a show or a role perfectly.

MxPickles · 16/02/2025 20:43

I don't think it is cynical to say that this year they are holding auditions with the knowledge that there are spots on skills courses available whereas in previous years these have not been available. More coures = More spots to fill. No cynicism just maths.

Great to hear all the positive news from all the casting workshops tho. Sound like everyone is having a blast. The social media feeds have been so much fun to watch this weekend too :)

TheOliveSwan · 16/02/2025 20:54

Sorry if I offended with my comment yesterday. I’ll be honest I think a little bit of healthy cynicism is natural/healthy when you have kids who have been around a bit in this industry. There are a lot of people out there who are plenty happy to take your money and give you false hope.
I’ll judge NYMT as I find them, and so far we’ve been pretty impressed and DD has had a wonderful time. Maybe the chances of getting a residential project from the recall stages are lower than I might have originally assumed though, that’s all.

Ah no you didn't offend at all. Please dont worry! I can understand your cynicism and I'm sure I would have wondered the same thing if I were new to it all this year. I can only speak from my own experience of my son being a part of it for several years, which is that the team at NYMT are great people who love working with young performers and genuinely want to create opportunities for them, but of course I can't expect you to take my word for that! I hope your DD has a wonderful time at recalls and gets an outcome she's happy with. Please keep us posted - is she there tomorrow?

Biscuitsneeded · 16/02/2025 21:28

@MxPickles Point taken. In fairness, in the past people could go to recalls and come away with nothing if they weren't cast in a show or in the (probably only one) new musical workshop. So it's nice that there are now more workshops and courses available so that everyone can be offered something. But you're right, the fact that the workshops and courses exist probably does mean they can recall more people than they used to in the knowledge that nobody will end up with nothing. But when you think about the cost of running 4 days of recalls - hire of a fantastic venue with enough studio space for all the shows, plus a full team of creatives for each project for 4 days, plus pastoral staff to make sure all the DC are safe and happy -that's got to cost a bomb, and all this is free of charge to the recalled DC. If they just wanted to fill courses to make ££ I think there might be cheaper ways to achieve that. I'll admit I'm a bit evangelical about NYMT so you'll have to bear with me 😉 - it's been the absolute making of my DS and he's had all sorts of amazing opportunities through them, so I just always want other young talented DC to be able to have a share of it all.

Biscuitsneeded · 16/02/2025 21:31

OK, a LOT evangelical!!😉😆😆

Mcmumager · 16/02/2025 21:33

Fab day for my ds today. Crossing everything for a good outcome as the level of talent just in his sessions was ridiculous! No idea how the can choose.

OML I am so invested at this point in everyone's recalls! My kiddo hasn't even been in yet and I am a bag of nerves. Good Luck to your DS

Aw I don't think anyone is knocking the workshops and yes it is great that so many people are getting the chance to take part, and they can do so in the knowledge that there is a space for them in something this year. Its also true to say that there are a lot more of us climbing the waiting room walls this year!

Montimom · 16/02/2025 22:43

Ok pass the biscuits @Biscuitsneeded we are joining the waiting room!! DD loved today, blown away by the talent in the room. Had a ball ❤️ glad she is busy this week and hopefully the week will go fast!! Lots of luck to the Monday and Tuesday auditionees 🙏

Which show did your dd recall for?! My dd was in the Tuck morning session. Good luck to your dd!

sleepisoverrated1 · 16/02/2025 22:48

Love the positive feedback from recalls! DS went yesterday and had the best day despite his lack of voice. He managed to get through the morning but knows his afternoon session wasn't his best. Everyone was lovely however, he enjoyed seeing some familiar faces and making new friends, too. The biscuit tin is stocked for the week! Good luck to those yet to go 🍀

She had carousel and Fame, beyond excited about both ❤️

Advent0range · 11/02/2025 10:29

All those recalls! That's exciting - well done to the DC!

Anyone know when musicians might hear? We've heard nothing yet 😕

@Advent0range did you see on NYMT insta stories yesterday, they said musicians would hear within the next 2 weeks?

Biscuitsneeded · 17/02/2025 13:58

Also, I'm just throwing some biscuits in here to keep us all going...

TheOliveSwan · 17/02/2025 14:19

Lunchtime update from DD is that she’s having a great time and has made a group of fast friends - which seems to be the trend when she goes to NYMT auditions!

Comefromaway · 17/02/2025 14:22

Good luck in the waiting room.

It appears that ds is workshopping one of the BYMT shows this week (the writers often use drama schools/conservatoires to do this prior to taking it to the organisation). As others have said earlier in the threads, workshopping a new musical can be counted as a credit.

Sorry to be slow on the uptake here, can you explain what you mean by counted as a credit? Do you mean a credit towards your DS degree?

Comefromaway · 17/02/2025 14:44

No, a professional credit on your performing CV for those wanting to go into the industry. Amateur or school shows can't be used although drama school/conservatoire shows can.

Agreed - when new grads get their Spotlight page, they will commonly list their drama school final year shows AND any shows or workshops they have done with NYMT. It is well regarded in the industry.

Are they sometimes recalled back for ANOTHER audition after this? Or do you mean, some get two sessions/2 musical call backs? Xx

No no, don't worry. I mean some DC will have been recalled for 2 shoes and therefore had a whole day working with NYMT creatives. Don't worry - if they said results will be out by the end of the week then they will be.

Oh I wasn’t worried - I’m just so curious to everything as we’re new! 🥰

Truetoself · 17/02/2025 19:17

My DD said the word on the street is that NYMT "tends to cast people they know from previous years"

I suppose anyone has to get cast for the first time ro get casted again?

Comefromaway · 17/02/2025 19:27

I don’t think that’s true.

it is true there are some young people who get cast every year but having seen them, it’s obvious why.

But the first year my son was involved one of the lead roles was played by a young lady who had never been in NYMT before. The other lead is now performing in a West End show.
