Spring /Summer 24 - Music thread

The old thread was filling up, so here's a new one to talk about music activities. Come and talk about music lessons, choosing instruments, exams, auditions, specialist schools, orchestras or whatever other music activities are going on. Everyone is welcome, from those with total beginners to those whose children are studying music at advanced levels. Ask for advice or share successes or struggles. There's loads of experience across a wide variety of instruments too(though bassoon's are weirdly popular on here - you'd think that every second child plays one!).

Sounds like it was amazing @amr78 - DD came out of hers a sobbing wreck last year (and still got a distinction despite hitting herself in the face with her own flute and allegedly muttering 'sorry' under her breath) so it sounds like he will have done exceptionally well! Fingers crossed.

londonmummy1966 · 22/06/2024 13:47

Massive sympathy to all those dealing with DC with exams. I'm sorry to say it never gets any easier - I spent a nail biting 45 minutes in the audience for DD1s third year undergrad recital last month and it was even worse than standing outside the exam room for her grade 8.....

yodaforpresident · 22/06/2024 15:21

I can’t quite believe this as it is so far from her self reported “reality” but she got a double distinction! To say she is pleased would be an understatement 😊

@minisnowballs we were at Wembley last night too - she was amazing. My ears were still hurting this morning!

minisnowballs · 22/06/2024 16:25

@yodaforpresident huge congrats. Yes, my ears still ringing too. What a night!

amr78 · 22/06/2024 18:40

@yodaforpresident well done to your DD on the double distinction. That’s a fabulous achievement! How long did you have to wait for the results?

yodaforpresident · 22/06/2024 19:21

Thank you @minisnowballs and @amr78 they were practicals done at school and came back in three days. I really can’t believe it as she was convinced she had failed the clarinet one.

Compsearch · 22/06/2024 20:49

Congratulations @yodaforpresident - that’s really brilliant!

Also well done to your son @amr78 and everyone else doing exams 😊

QueenMabby · 22/06/2024 20:53

That's great @yodaforpresident - congrats to your dd!

No results for us yet. Also a practical done in school - Tuesday. Fingers crossed for a result this week.

My dd is grade 8 now ( violin) she bought a better carbon fibre bow with her last violin but has since had a new wooden one that she prefers( £600 though..)
if you’re anywhere near us your dd is welcome to try some( we now have a few..)

Sorry- completely missed this very kind offer. We have 4 on trial now from Caswells so need to decide which to keep! Thank you though!

DD2 did her G6 singing exam this morning - think she'd just about 'shaken off' the post Taylor Swift hoarseness. No idea how it went, since she's back in the boarding house of course - I got a text saying 'good', and a long explanation about how the examiner was a bassoonist and had pupils who had done residential stuff at her school before - so clearly they had time for a chat if nothing else.

yodaforpresident · 24/06/2024 16:31

Well done to your DD @minisnowballs - 3.5 hours of singing along at top volume but so much fun! I always take it as a good sign when the examiner has a little chat with them afterwards.

QueenMabby · 24/06/2024 17:39

Fingers crossed for your dd @minisnowballs.

Results are coming in pretty fast for exams at the moment I think. 134 and a distinction for my dd for her g4 singing that she took last Tuesday. She's very pleased as she was brewing up for what has been a pretty horrible cold so she wasn't sure she'd done her best work!

minisnowballs · 24/06/2024 17:56

Brilliant news @QueenMabby - so pleased for her. I'm not expecting anything like that for DD - just glad it's done. Preparation for it has been scrappy as she's mostly focused on her instruments but nice she got to take it anyway.

QueenMabby · 24/06/2024 18:00

We weren't expecting it either! Not sure she's done any singing practice outside of her 30 minute weekly lesson since September but fortunately it doesn't seem to have hurt her this time.

minisnowballs · 24/06/2024 18:14

Brilliant news anyway @QueenMabby - hope she's suitably thrilled (and recovered)

amr78 · 24/06/2024 20:21

@QueenMabby congratulations to your dd. Glad she managed to get her exam done before the cold fully took hold. Not very patiently waiting for news here - ds has asked me several times already and although I know it’s too soon for the result to come through from an exam on Saturday, it hasn’t stopped me checking the portal multiple times!

Does anyone know if the practical exams get released on the portal at a particular time? I entered ds and he did his exam at a public venue rather than through school.

horseymum · 24/06/2024 20:54

Great exam results for everyone. It's so hard waiting! They have all worked so hard.

yodaforpresident · 24/06/2024 23:57

Great news @QueenMabby for your DD - the dreaded cold is never far away for the singers.

I'm not sure @amr78 that there is any difference in result wait in public vs school - not sure though as we have always done them at school. Hopefully not too much longer to wait for your DS.

amr78 · 25/06/2024 03:34

I’ve just found out that ds has got 138 in his grade 8 clarinet! My poor husband wondered what on earth was happening with all my shrieking! I’m in utter disbelief - ds felt it had gone well but we weren’t expecting such a high mark. I’ve printed it out the mark sheet and put it in an envelope so we can film him opening it in the morning.

minisnowballs · 25/06/2024 07:24

Brilliant news @amr78 - you must be so proud of him....hope he's thrilled

yodaforpresident · 25/06/2024 07:38

Fantastic news @amr78 - I love the idea of filming him opening the envelope! Well done to your DS.

QueenMabby · 25/06/2024 08:14

That's a fantastic result @amr78 - particularly for grade 8. Well done your ds!

Comefromaway · 25/06/2024 08:26

Fantastic result

horseymum · 25/06/2024 08:47

Hope he was really pleased with that.
