So we are packed. Ds eating dinner.

Then we are off Grin

Of course we had to weigh everything properly to make sure we weren't 1g over and that the things he has which will get used (suncream) will make sure he's below the amount when he travels to Germany from Turkey.

And re read all the airport and baggage rules again just for good measure. You know - in case they changed from this morning, and yesterday and the day before.

I forgot just how autistic he can be at times 🤣🤣🫣🙄🤷‍♀️

Wondering if anyone has any experience/advice. DD (10) swam her usual session on Weds eve, when I picked her up from school on Thursday she said she has pain in her shoulder/back. The place she is holding, she puts her left hand over the shoulder to her back- in between the spine and the shoulder if you know what I mean, so not really the main shoulder area. She didn't swim Thursday eve, said it was a bit better Friday so wanted to swim. Usually an hour and a half but she got out after an hour saying it hurt. I did think it was a pulled muscle but don't know now. It's been hurting her today too. We are trying alternating cold and hot and resting - does this sound like a swimming injury? Is there anyone I should take her to? She's not in agony but obviously not totally comfortable either

Talk to her coach they should be able to advise. We have a physio who all our club swimmers use and who liaises with coaches where necessary.

itsgettingweird · 30/04/2023 06:36

I get pain there when I have a knotted muscle!

So yes could be from swimming but may not be an injury as such. Agree if club has someone ask them.

If they don't try massaging the area and seeing if there's a knot there. Heat (deep heat or pain gel) usually gets rid of it.

Hope she feels better soon.

Madcats · 30/04/2023 09:39

Yuja it is well worth getting an opinion from a physio (or maybe a chiropractor); try to find a sports injury specialist who can work on children. If your club can't suggest one, your local Uni might have a team (or try contacting what would be your nearest "club of clubs").

Is your DD a fly swimmer by chance? Mixing up her strokes and doing more work with a kickboard might help her in the interim.

We had a girl in our club who really struggled through puberty; was very sporty and so her school were putting her in every team going and wasn't making letting her rest when she had injuries. Her bones were growing at different speeds too, to complicate things.
The coach used to have to apply heavy pressure to her shoulder to unknot things.

She volunteers as a swim coach now.

Yuja · 30/04/2023 10:31

She's not a flyer, however she's had quite a bit of input on this stroke recently and has been practising it a lot so perhaps it's increased use of that muscle. I have asked her coach for some advice in terms of her training and if there's anyone she can see or speak to. She's getting a bit stressed out about missing training but I think it's important to try and ease it before she trains again

Random question!

Are any of you on FB groups for swimming? I keep getting recommended to join them and I wondered if they are good and helpful?

I love this group and would want something that lives up to my expectations!

I'm on Swim Family UK it is a bit bonkers sometimes and some people on there are definitely the type of swim.parents I try to avoid at poolside but its can be useful and interesting sometimes.

itsgettingweird · 01/05/2023 09:00

That's the one that came up today! I thought it might be useful because it's U.K. specific.

But everyone here is so knowledgable I don't want to end up in a group that drives me nuts but doesn't give me any useful info 🫣🤣

I might give it a whirl!

It can be useful especially around Regionals/Nationals etc for sharing info and tickets BUT it can be annoying and frustrating. I like this thread a lot better for sensible opinions and advice.

Glittertwins · 01/05/2023 11:30

I don't but we have a pretty good group of parents at our club and a 'rival' so we do pitch in together especially around the whirlwind of counties and regionals.
Last but one day for us at regionals today and so far so good. Only been fleeced for one new pair of race goggles (I did insist he got a spare pair though).

I’m in that fb group too. It’s mainly questions such as finding a 1500 with no every times, or asking for goggle recommendations.
Sometimes it’s useful, though our coach is also a member so I’m always cautious with my comments 🫢

Glittertwins · 01/05/2023 19:45

I just look up licensed meets, usually easier!

Yes mostly although now people have worked out how to post anonymously there is a fair bit of complaining as well.

itsgettingweird · 01/05/2023 20:59

How do you post anonymously Confused

Not that I intend to moan about anything! Or even post.

Glittertwins · 02/05/2023 13:26

Damn, interim lists have been posted but looks like they don't have the times from this weekend yet

I think the results slowly trickle in, sometimes taking a day or 2 to appear. And the list seems to sporadically get updated - not the twice weekly that they state. It might even be refreshed again today. Definitely check again tomorrow

Glittertwins · 02/05/2023 13:57

We weren't sure if they'd get them submitted in time. Should be back on British for everything now (until South West and Mount Kelly/Millfield do theirs!)

OP posts:
Hellocatshome · 02/05/2023 14:28

Its very unlikely DS will ever feature on 'the list' but can someone explains how it works? I thought the top 24 were invited to British and then the 24 after that were invited to English but then by that token once at least 48 kids in the same age had swam the same race there should be 24 entries on each list, but there isnt?

Glittertwins · 02/05/2023 14:36

It's top 24 for British then the next 22 for home nations for all except 800/1500m where it's top 16 in British.
If someone rejects their event place in British, then it is offered to the faster home nation qualifier.
British is further complicated by boys 15/under and girls 14/under (I think) cannot do any non freestyle 50s events. They can only do the freestyle if they've qualified for AND entered the 100m free event. Personally I don't like this because DS isn't a 50m sprinter but will more than likely qualify because he has the 100m time & therefore denies that sprinter the opportunity.

Last year, sadly, it appears that the home nations didn't then backfill in the same way which is why there were several unfilled events. I don't know if there will be a change for this this year.

OP posts:
Glittertwins · 02/05/2023 14:37

Sorry, I think it's 20 for home nations, not 22!

@Glittertwins hope the results are on soon and they update the list! Looking on Swim England, results are on rankings from 5 regions from this weekend, but some still missing.

@Hellocatshome i’m sure someone more expert will answer soon, but the distance events are less than 24, and home nations are then slightly less than British - Wales is 20, and I think England is 22 (not sure on Scotland)

One thing I had wondered was if the home nations take the next ranked if some don’t accept, or get moved up to British. It seems a shame if they don’t and just have empty places instead

Glittertwins · 02/05/2023 14:41

The times aren't yet on the rankings database anyway, we had a look after noticing the list updated date.
