Getting a bit close to the end of the previous one!

That does sound a long time especially with the kind of money and resources they presumably have to fix it. A local schools pool room flooded a few weeks ago and it was up and running the next day.

Eccle80 · 13/12/2023 22:37

That sounds a bit of a disaster, and a long time to fix. Are there other pools that could host instead?

Madcats · 14/12/2023 05:59

Somerset Counties is huge, to encourage wide participation. Races like girls 50 free had 28 heats last year.

If they shuffle the timetable to start with the long distance and 400s, and perhaps 200s, they could probably stage these at a smaller pool during January and hope that things are fixed by February.

With the host school typically entering about 150 swimmers, I don't envy their coaches.

Glittertwins · 14/12/2023 17:08

@itsgettingweird - hope everything is ok and there isn't a problem with why he's not there.
Race 1 went well, fingers crossed for the rest although the worst of the events is tomorrow sometime (when I've figured out session and stream number!)

Glad race 1 went well.

Ds is just struggling with recovery and continuing training due to his legs and so decided best to train as he has BPSIM in feb. Then he came down with a cold Tuesday anyway so ended up being lucky we'd made that decision because he's not able to even train at his best! Going to miss tomorrow as his muscles don't like when he has a virus and he needs to lay in for proper recovery!

itsgettingweird · 24/12/2023 20:07

Merry Christmas everyone.

We have 3 days off training and back Wednesday!

Glittertwins · 25/12/2023 08:10

Happy Christmas 🎅🏻 everyone
Also got 3 days off from the pool and am enjoying the later mornings!

Happy Christmas everyone hope you all had a good one. DS and I did the boxing day dip today in the North Sea. We have both vowed never again although DS seems to have warmed up fairly quickly while I'm in so many layers I cant move and I'm.still shivering.

WarningToTheCurious · 26/12/2023 14:01

There was the old Billy Connolly joke about Aberdeen beach - at one end mums are shoving their kids in to swim and at the other end they’re fishing out fully grown men in survival suits.

It's nowhere near as mild today as it was yesterday and there's no way I'd have done it then too!!!

Merry Christmas - sessions start back tomorrow for us.

itsgettingweird · 05/01/2024 07:46

Happy new year all.

Hope everyone's return to training has been ok. We have been back to full timetable since Tuesday and feeling it already 😂

Counties on 20th Jan - ds has opted just to swim 800m as he's usually train then and then he's up to Aberdeen for Para World Series.

Next meet will be April but not sure if it's our club Easter meet or British Champs as no qualifying standards for paras - they'll get invited individually. And no idea if likely to get invited with no clue about what standard they jab to be 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️😂

Glittertwins · 05/01/2024 08:16

Good luck to him in Aberdeen, that's a long way to go - he's flying up?
Mine has been on a training camp this week and will be picked up later. Looking at the schedule, it was pretty hard core so I suspect someone will be mainly sleeping tomorrow!!

Hope he enjoyed camp. Ds always loved the, but yes - came home knackered 😂

He is flying to Aberdeen. My dad's going up with him as it's term time. Got to do well there as I think British invites will be based on those swims so he's head in the game currently!

Glittertwins · 05/01/2024 16:27

Hope he gets into British Champs!

That’s properly exciting stuff

Eccle80 · 06/01/2024 14:14

Happy new year to you all! The trip to Aberdeen sounds exciting, and fingers crossed for British Champs - a bit frustrating there is no guidance on times

Our counties start next weekend with the long distance. I’ve never been to the distance day before but youngest has qualified this year. I’m a bit worried about doing both in the same day especially as he has only done distance at club champs before - any tips on recovery in between? He should have about 3.5 hours I think, so my thoughts were some chocolate milk, something to eat and a nap in the back of the car. I’m never convinced it is great scheduling to have both on the same day, but a lot do swim both.

Hellocatshome · 06/01/2024 14:45

@itsgettingweird ooh Aberdeen sounds exciting good luck to your DS.

@Eccle80 how old is your swimmer? Our coaches always say about 15 and under they bounce back from a distance race to swim in the afternoon session perfectly fine. Just need food, hydration and maybe a bit of fresh air. I know my DS would certainly not thank me for taking him away from his team mates for a nap in the car. I would just see what your swimmer wants to do

Eccle80 · 06/01/2024 15:03

@Hellocatshome thank you, he’s 12 so i’m hoping at least he is young enough to recover reasonably fast without stiffening up! The other ones from the club in the first session are older and my eldest’s friends, and although he gets on with them, he’s likely to be a bit on his own and get bored. He’s got one friend there for the second session but he won’t be there when he has the long wait. Fresh air definitely sounds a good plan

Glittertwins · 06/01/2024 16:47

That's tough having both on the same day. Mine doesn't like racing them on consecutive days!

With 3.5 hours, he could probably have choc milk and some lunch and a nap (but yeah, may not want to nap).

Lying down, legs up against a wall? Mine swears this helps with lactic.

Eccle80 · 07/01/2024 11:19

@Glittertwins yes I agree, I’m guessing it is a hangover from when male and female did different distances not both and they never changed the structure to reflect swimmers doing both events.

@Porseb thanks will get him to try that. And maybe nap not such a good idea then! I remember his coach suggesting it when he had a long break between heat and finals at regionals so I think that was why I thought it might be worth it. But maybe choc milk, some food and a gentle walk for fresh air is better

Porseb · 07/01/2024 11:31

I know my DD and a lot of other swimmers will have naps between long heats and finals sessions.

Some swimmers resist this but I think it's still a good idea to get lying down at some point in some form.

He's got this - he trains more mileage in his sessions 💪🏼

Glittertwins · 07/01/2024 11:32

The problem with a nap is that he could wake up quite sluggish. He'll need a way to pull his heartbeat right up ready to go again. Ask his coach, they will know what's best.
We're in the position of having a pool warmup and then not racing for about 2 hours with no other warm up pool available.
