So our children is a reasonable standard cricket players. Both primary school. Between them they play for 7 teams!
We have had low level grumbling before and the occasional unsportsmanlike behaviour from teammates / opposition. But recently they had a match against another school and DC2 said that the opposition's fielders were behaving really badly and talking at / to the batsman to distract them whilst they are batting. Non stop negative comments. Their teacher told them off once and then left them to it. One of the batters asked them to shut up - made no difference.
By the end of the match DC2 was pretty chewed up by this behaviour. So I spoke to his teacher who had been umpiring and he agreed the other team had behaved appallingly.
DC2 is very young (8) and now anxious about playing these kids again and why their school allow them to behave so badly etc.
Is this normal now in cricket for U11s? Or has he been unlucky to meet this kind of behaviour? How do other schools manage it? Our teacher said its totally not tolerated at our school (thank goodness). These are mostly 10, 11 year olds not middle aged men...

Awful! I recall some teams are notorious for this, very unsportsmanlike.

Sounds like poor umpiring to me from the teacher/coach. If it is not tolerated at their school then why is it being tolerated in a match? They should be taught how to complain appropriately to the umpire about unsporting behaviour and there should be a proper procedure in place to deal with it when it happens.

Thanks folks. Fortunately its only 1 team from 1 school but still in my mind very unnecessary and I'm disappointed that neither their own teacher nor the teacher from our school nipped it in the bud. Turns out a specific child is notorious for it and everyone seems to know but no one taking any action!!
