After checking the age requirement, DD can have 2 goes for the under 8 category for project.

Just wondered if any OP can share your DC success in this age category as a cellist? What grade (Abram/trinity) your DC had and what levels they were playing at the time when your DC auditioned?

I understand it's super competitive and depends largely on the audition. It is a long shot for DD but she can have a target to work towards Grin

Will your child be 8 on the 31st August? Otherwise there is no "under 8" category this year.

There never was an under 8 category as such.

U10 used to be year 3-5 I think. Then u11 year 6 etc.
This year they stopped running u10 and u11 national orchestras and instead have Projects, they had to be at least 8 on 31st Aug to apply so y4+.

I'm not sure if "Projects" is their long term plan or a don't want to do residentials with primary school children during covid temporary solution.

Either way if you have a keen under 8, you may or may not be able to apply next year, but have several years to try for projects or u10 if it comes back. Could be a total beginner now and still aspire to it!

That's very helpful! Thank you

My DD is a cellist. She's just got into under 12s after a brief wait on the reserve list. She is playing at around G6 standard but has really good tone and solid technique. That said, I was (happily) surprised as cello is one of the more competitive instruments and we know many of the cellists her age are G8 and beyond! I believe her sparkly personality came through in her audition video and this probably helped them see past a few imperfections...
