Grade 5 Music Theory - Intensive Online Course

My son needs to do his Grade 5 music theory and as he has more time now due to lockdown, looking at doing an intensive course ideally over half term.
He’s in his final year at secondary school so should be fine with the amount of studying required.
Does anyone have any recommendations?

I would have thought he could just get some books, watch some YouTube and use some apps if he is motivated, would be cheaper and more flexible. Does he have any grounding in music theory? We use the Blitz books, the answer books are online for self checking. The muso app is good, and then past papers from abrsm ( a couple of free ones are available).

I know someone who did this course, and did v well (I can't personally recommend it as I've not done it myself, though I've come across the teacher in other contexts and she is excellent).

At that age and if he's playing an instrument at Grade 5 level, I would take the approach of him working independently through the Grade 5 ABRSM book (be careful to buy the current book of whatever publisher you choose as the syllabus had some significant changes in the past couple of years).

Then have some lessons lined up with a teacher who can go through his work, identify the areas that need tuition and do a tailored set of lessons to cover these. It'll probably only require around 3 hours of lessons like this assuming he has a good grasp of notation from playing and especially if he plays the piano or guitar so understands how chords work.

Theory is easily teachable on Zoom using screen sharing.

Check on the abrsm website because they have added some German terms since this book was written I think.
